Shelby County was formed in 1835. It was named, like the district capital Shelbyville, after Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), the first and fifth governor of Kentucky (1792-1796, 1812-1816).

According to the 2010 census , Shelby County had 6,373 people in 2,705 households. The population density was 4.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.30 people each in the 2705 households.
