geography
The county is located in northwest Missouri on the Missouri River , which forms the border with Kansas and Nebraska . To the east, the county is bounded by the Nodaway River .

history
Holt County was formed in 1841 on the area of Indian land ceded to Missouri by the Platte Purchase in 1836 . It was named after David Rice Holt , an MP in Platte County , which was then also the area of what is now Holt County .
