history

Iron County was formed on February 17, 1857 from parts of Dent County, Madison County, Reynolds County, St. Francois County, Washington County, and Wayne County. It was named, like the district capital Ironton, after the iron ore mines that occur in this area.

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 6, 2018).
