history

Wentzville was founded in 1855 as a depot on the Northern Missouri Railroad . The place was named after the railway engineer Erasmus Livingston Wentz . The surrounding land was taken over by William M. Allen and the place was created.

During the Civil War in July 1861, the site was the scene of numerous skirmishes along the railway line. Confederate guerrilla units threatened the important railway line and units of the Union Army repulsed it.
