Johann Richard Mucke (born March 23, 1846 in Pirna ; † November 10, 1925 in Pötzscha ) was a German geographer, ethnologist and statistician in Dorpat.

Life

Mucke studied at the University of Leipzig and the Philipps University of Marburg . He was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. Habilitated since 1878 , he was associate professor at the Royal University of Greifswald from 1881 to 1884 . In Greifswald he married Hedwig George in 1883, the daughter of a Greifswald university professor. In 1884, he followed the call of the Chair of the University of Tartu , where he remained until 1909 professor was for geography, ethnography and statistics. In 1908 he became a real Councilor of State . He is considered the founder of ethnological research into prehistory. He spent his twilight years in Pötzscha in Saxon Switzerland . Since 1866 he was a member, later an honorary member, of the Corps Thuringia Leipzig .
