The Bayview Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Mississippi River that connects Quincy , Illinois with West Quincy , Missouri . US Highway 24 leads over the bridge in a westerly direction, in the opposite direction Highway 24 leads over the older Quincy Memorial Bridge .
The bridge takes the pressure off the Quincy Memorial Bridge , which is still in operation . This had become necessary because the downstream Hannibal (Missouri) , the Interstate 72 should be extended. In order to make room for the new Mark Twain Memorial Bridge , which was completed in 2000, the old bridge over which US Highway 36 ran had to be demolished. To cope with the considerably increasing traffic over Quincy, the Bayview Bridge was built in Quincy.
