Pike County was formed on January 31, 1821 from the northern parts of Madison County , Bond County and Clark County . At that time its size made up around 30 percent of Illinois and extended from the border with Missouri to the north on the border with Wisconsin and Lake Michigan, including the then small town of Chicago .
The county was named after Zebulon Montgomery Pike (1779-1813), an early explorer of what was then Louisiana , who later fell as brigadier general of the US Army in the 1812 war .
The area of Pike County belonged to Virginia in 1778 , from 1784 to the Northwest Territory and from 1801 to the Indiana Territory. The current county boundaries weren't established until 1825.
It was settled from 1820. The courthouse, which is still in use today, was built in 1894 and is one of the most beautiful in Illinois. Famous people such as Abraham Lincoln , later President of the United States, and Thomas Ford and Richard Yates , two later governors of Illinois, worked as lawyers at the Pike County Court . Governor John Reynolds and later US Senator Stephen A. Douglas also worked here as district judges .
