The Moultrie County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Illinois . In 2010 , the county had 14,846 residents and a population density of 17.1 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Sullivan .
geography
The county is located in central southeast Illinois. It has an area of 892 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. In the southeast, the county is traversed by the Kaskaskia River , which is dammed up in the south of neighboring Shelby County to Lake Shelbyville , which is predominantly in Moultrie County . history
Moultrie County was formed on February 16, 1843 from Macon Counties and Shelby Counties. It was named after William Moultrie , a general in the Revolutionary Army from South Carolina and later governor. In 1776 he defended the fort on Sullivan's Island from the advancing British, which was later renamed Fort Moultrie .
The first courthouse, a loosely nailed wooden hut, was built in 1847. The second in 1865 and the third, still in use today, in 1904.

According to the 2010 census , Moultrie County had 14,846 people in 5611 households. The population density was 17.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.55 people lived in each of the 5611 households.
The racial the population was composed of 98.3 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.0 percent of the population.
24.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 57.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.4 percent were 65 years or older. 51.4 percent of the population was female.
