The county is located in southern Illinois, about 60 kilometers north of the Ohio River , which forms the border with Kentucky . Saline County covers an area of 1002 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers are water. In the area of Saline County both headwaters of the Saline River , a tributary of the Ohio, unite . economy
The exploration of the existing mineral resources and especially the coal mining form the largest part of the jobs. Saline County is home to the Galatia Mine , which is the largest underground mine in Illinois by industry standards and employs over 500 people. The supplier and service companies, which are also located in the area, provide another 500 jobs.
history
Saline County was formed as the 99th County on February 25, 1847 from Gallatin County. It was named after the salt mines found in this area.
