The Tazewell County is a county in the US state of Illinois . At the 2010 census , the county had 135,394 residents and a population density of 80.5 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Pekin , which is named after the Chinese capital Beijing .

Tazewell County was formed on January 31, 1827 from parts of Peoria Counties and Fayette Counties. It was named after Littleton Waller Tazewell , a lawyer, Virginia delegate , US Senator, and 27th Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia .

The first white settler is believed to have been Robert Cavelier de La Salle in 1680 , who went ashore here with 33 other people in January on the east bank of the Illinois River and built a small camp near what is now the city of Pekin so that the group could winter.

According to the 2010 census , Tazewell County had 135,394 people in 53,727 households. The population density was 80.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.43 people lived in each of the 53,727 households.

The racial the population was composed of 96.2 percent white, 1.0 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.7 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.9 percent of the population.

23.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years or older. 50.7 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was 54,232  USD . The per capita income was $ 27,036. 7.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
