Washington is a town in Tazewell County in the northern center of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Washington had 10,841 residents; until the official estimate in 2009, the population had increased to 14,292.

Washington extends over 19.42 km², which consists entirely of land.

The city is located 12 km east of the Illinois River , a left tributary of the Mississippi .

US Highway 24 runs in a west-east direction on the northern outskirts of Washington . A few kilometers south of the city runs parallel to Interstate 74 , which is the shortest connection between the Quad Cities and Indianapolis . The llinois State Route 8 , coming from the southwest, leads into the center of Washington, where a number of secondary roads meet.

A BNSF Railway runs through downtown Washington in a west-east direction.

The closest major cities are Peoria (18.3 km west), Illinois' capital Springfield (120 km south), Bloomington (56.1 km southeast), Chicago (239 km northeast) and the Quad Cities (172 km northwest).

On November 17, 2013 were a tornado stage F4 destroyed large parts of the city. At least 3 people died.

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000 , the population was 10,841. These were distributed over 4,189 households in 3,091 families. The population density was 558.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 4,451 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 229.1 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 98.4 percent white , 0.3 percent African American , 0.1 percent Native American , 0.4 percent Asian, and 0.3 percent other. 0.6 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 0.7 percent of the population were Hispanics who belonged to any of the above groups.

26.0 percent were under 18 years of age, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.0 percent 65 and older. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 95.3 men, 90.5 among the over 18 year olds.

The median income per household was 52,210  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 61,184 USD. The median income for men was $ 44,896 and that for women was $ 26,035. The per capita income was $ 24,231. Around 2.8 percent of families and 4.1 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
