The Douglas County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Illinois . In 2010 , the county had 19,980 people and a population density of 18.5 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Tuscola .
The county is characterized by intensive agriculture (maize, soy) as well as by the (mostly German-speaking ) Amish population in the southwestern part around Arthur and Arcola , who live without automobiles and electricity and who stand out in the landscape and cityscape with their clothing and horse-drawn carriages.

The first land occupation was by Harrison Gill of Kentucky , whose title deed is signed by Andrew Jackson . Another early settler was John A. Richman from West Virginia , who built the first half-timbered house in 1829. On February 8, 1859, the county was formed from part of Coles County. It was named after the US Senator Stephen A. Douglas , a US Senator from Illinois. Since the formation of the county it has been connected to the railroad network via the Wabash Railroad and the Illinois Central Railroad . Much of the county was marshland until it was drained by a drainage system modeled on Florida and the land could be cultivated as arable land.
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Douglas County had 19,980 people in 7,572 households. The population density was 18.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.61 people lived in each of the 7572 households.
The racial the population was composed of 97.7 percent white, 0.6 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.4 percent of the population.
25.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.4 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.0 percent were 65 years or older. 50.8 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 46,941 USD . The per capita income was $ 21,438. 10.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
