Tuscola is a small town and the administrative seat of Douglas County in the eastern part of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Tuscola had 4448 inhabitants.

Tuscola is 39 ° 47'52 "north latitude and 88 ° 16'54" west longitude. The city extends over 5.5 km², which consists exclusively of land.
US Highway 36 , which crosses US Highway 45 on the southeastern outskirts, runs through Tuscola in an east-west direction . Interstate 57 runs on the western edge of the city and is the shortest connection from Chicago (255 km northeast of Tuscola) and Memphis , Tennessee (604 km southwest of Tuscola). Via Decatur , 60.8 km away , it is 126 km west to Springfield , the capital of Illinois. It is 185 km east on Highway 36 to Indiana's capital Indianapolis .

history
When it was founded in 1868, OC Hackett was elected head of Tuscola Township with a majority of one vote over WB Ervin . Hackett had a sassafras plantation known as Hackett's Run well before Douglas County was founded in 1884. Hackett's father, John Hackett , settled in neighboring Coles County in 1835 . According to family chronicles, Abraham Lincoln was a guest on the family farm during the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858.

In the 2000 census, the population was 4,448. These were distributed over 1,885 households in 1,261 families. The population density was 815.7 / km². There were 2,015 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 369.6 / km².
