The US Highway 45 (short US 45 ) is a north-south United States highway . The US 45 runs across the United States, from Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico . A sign at the northernmost point of the road shows the total distance as 1,300 miles (2,092 km).
In 2004, the north end of the road in Ontonagon , Michigan , where it meets MI 64 , was steps from the shores of Lake Superior. The southernmost point is in Mobile , where it meets US Highway 98 .
Until 1934, the north end of US 45 was in the Chicago metropolitan area . Before the interstate highway system was built, the trunk road was one of the most important connections between Chicago and the Gulf Coast. The road south of Effingham saw less traffic as travelers heading southwest on Illinois State Route 37 for New Orleans turned off toward US 51 to Cairo .

Alabama
US Highway 45 begins in central Mobile on US Highway 98 and meets Interstate 65 on the outskirts of Mobile . It then runs in a northerly direction along with the unmarked Alabama State Route 17 between Mobile and Vinegar Bend in Washington County and then to the state border with Mississippi with the unmarked Alabama State Route 57 .
Mississippi
In Mississippi, the highway continues north , creating a bypass for various places such as Waynesboro , Shubuta, and Quitman . Around Meridian , the US Highway has been expanded into a freeway and meets Interstates 20 and 59 as well as US Highways 11 and 80 . At Mayhew he crosses US Highway 82 , which connects the cities of Columbus and Starkville , among other places . A section of US Highway 45 near Tupelo has also been developed as a freeway. The first town the road meets in Kentucky is Fulton . From there it runs in a northeasterly direction parallel to Purchase Parkway to Mayfield . From Mayfield, US Highway 45 runs as a four-lane road north to Paducah . In the city, he meets Interstate 24 and US Highways 60 and 62 . Illinois

From Clintonville the highway heads northwest to Wittenberg . It also crosses US Highway 8 in the village of Monico . After Land O 'Lakes the highway reaches the state of Michigan.
Michigan
In Michigan, the US Highway 45 runs in a northerly direction in sparsely populated country and meets at Watersmeet on US Highway 2 . Michigan State Route 28 crosses the highway in the village of Bruce Crossing . Michigan State Route 26 branches off southeast of Rockland . From this junction, US 45 heads north-west. US Highway 45 ends on the shores of Lake Superior in downtown Ontonagon just after an intersection with Michigan State Routes 38 and 64 .
Development history
Except for a few short stretches near cities, US Highway 45 remained a two-lane road through Alabama , Mississippi, and Tennessee for most of the time well into the 1980s.
