history

When the first whites arrived, Indians from the Pottawatomi tribe lived as hunter nomads in the area. In the War of 1812 they fought on the British side, in the Black Hawk War of 1832 on the side of the American settlers. Even so, the Indians began to leave the area after 1832.

The first permanent white settlement was a cabin on Sequoit Creek . A sawmill was built there in 1839, around which a small trading center gradually developed. A replica of the sawmill can now be viewed a little below the old location.

The community of Antioch was founded by a small Protestant sect shortly before the civil war . Although religious enthusiasm had declined in 1843, the name Antioch, alluding to Antioch in Asia Minor , was retained.

Antioch became a center of abolitionism . As a result, a disproportionate number of young men served in the Union Army .

Shortly after the civil war, many religious settlers left Antioch and the community was dissolved. In 1892 a new congregation was founded, the tradition of which follows on from the previous one. The place grew and new settlers, particularly of British and German descent, started farms and businesses.

At the end of the 19th century, Antioch became a recreational area for Chicago residents. Tourism grew rapidly, so a railway line was inaugurated in 1886. The farms in the area were increasingly taking in summer visitors. Hotels and holiday apartments were built, boat trips through the many lakes were made, and many people went on hunting and fishing trips, which are very popular in the USA, in the area. During Prohibition , Al Capone had a summer home in Antioch.

An important branch of the economy was the production of ice, which was used in domestic ice-cream cabinets. Pickard China , a US porcelain factory, has been a major employer in Antioch since 1937. In the 1950s, a large industrial park was created in Antioch, which provides much of the jobs and taxes paid in the city.
