history
The Potawatomi Indians settled in the area of Libertyville until August 1829 . Due to economic problems, they had to sell the land to the US government; then the price was $ 12,000, plus $ 12,000 in kind and 50 barrels of salt annually .
According to the treaty, the Potawatomi left the country in the mid-1830s. In 1835 the first non-indigenous resident, George Vardin, was able to settle in what would later become Libertyville. Vardin is said to have been an educated English migrant who lived in a hut with his wife and daughter. At this point is now part of the Cook Park. The village was named Vardin's Grove after Vardin .
During the 60th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence in 1836, the city was renamed Independence Gove . The town's first doctor and lawyer began their duties the following year. For this it was necessary to create an infrastructure and so a post office was created, whereby another name change had to be carried out. Therefore the city named itself on April 16, 1837 in Libertyville .
Two years later the name was changed again; the new name was Burlington as it became the seat of Lake County . However, since the seat was moved to Little Fort (Waukegan is the Potawatomi word for Little Fort ), the name change was reversed. After that, the city name remained unchanged.
Libertyville's most famous building, the Cook Mansion was built in 1879 by Ansel Brainerd Cook. It's very close to where the Vardin Cabin was.
