history
Richard Theodore Freese, Ron Freese and Jim Carswell founded a farm in 1851 on land that would later be Vernon Hills. The use of the area did not change until the 1950s when part of it was acquired for a residential complex and a golf course. This is when the name "Vernon Hills" was first used. On June 16, 1958, the place was officially incorporated into a single parcel with 123 residents and 125 houses. During this time the administration and the police station were operated in a local motel until 1971 when the village manager purchased two mobile buildings. The community grew slowly but steadily until the 1971 purchase of a piece of land near the corner of IL-60 and IL-21 that led to the construction of the Hawthorn Center. By 1980 the population had grown to almost 10,000 inhabitants and in 2000 more than 20,000 inhabitants were counted.
By integrating the surrounding areas, the community grew geographically in the 1980s and 1990s. This included land on which the Corporate Woods Business Park and Centennial Crossing Housing Development were later built (1986), part of Hawthorne-Mellody Farms (1988) and part of Village Half Day, Illinois (1994). Land was acquired in 2000 and used at various times as a missile base by the United States Army , a naval training center by the United States Navy, and the Curtiss Candy Company . This land is now home to the Vernon Hills Sports Complex.
