Highland Park is a city in Lake County in the US state of Illinois . According to the last census in 2000, the population is 31,365. The city is on the north end of Chicago . It has a very large Jewish community .
history
Highland Park was founded in 1869 and the village of Ravinia was incorporated into it in 1899. After the Second World War, the until then small Jewish community u. a. due to Jews who immigrated from Germany, there was a considerable influx of people, so that soon every third person in the place known as a summer health resort was of Jewish faith. In 1948 the Beth El Synagogue was founded.

Highland Park is about 32 km². 0.08% of the urban area is water. There is a 30 meter high cliff that stretches 6 miles along Lake Michigan and an inland gorge that is 177 meters deep and 1.8 km in length.
traffic
The main traffic axis is the US Highway 41 which connects Chicago with Milwaukee . Chicago O'Hare International Airport is 20 miles south .
Culture and sights
In Highland Park there is a building by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), the Ward W. Willits House .
The city has a downtown shopping district . The city is also the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The Ravinia Festival takes place in Highland Parks. This festival was initially intended as a cultural program for the village of Ravinia, but later the village was incorporated into the Highland Park community and thus the Ravinia Festival became a festival of Highland Park. Ravinia was originally an enclave of artists ; despite being incorporated into the Highland Park community, it has retained the character that is characterized by the simple lifestyle.
Highland Park is inscribed on the United States' Archive of Great Historic Places.
