The county is located in the extreme northeast of Illinois in the northern suburbs of Chicago . It has an area of 3543 square kilometers, of which 2384 square kilometers are water surface.
In the north the county borders on Wisconsin in the east the border with Michigan lies in Lake Michigan .

The Lake County was formed and on March 1, 1839, from parts of the former McHenry County named after Lake Michigan (Lake Michigan).
The first administrative seat was Libertyville. In 1841 the administrative headquarters were relocated to Little Fort, which was renamed Waukegan. Prior to the occupation by white settlers, the area was open prairie and home to the Potawatomi Indians. The first white settler was Captain Daniel Wright in 1834.

As of the 2010 census , Lake County had 703,462 people in 239,246 households. The population density was 607 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.84 people each in the 239,246 households.
The racial the population was composed of 75.1 percent white, 7.0 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 6.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 19.9 percent of the population regardless of ethnicity.
27.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 62.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 10.4 percent were 65 years or older. 50.1 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 78,948 USD . The per capita income was $ 38,120. 7.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
