The county is located in the south-southeastern part of Illinois at the confluence of the Wabash River in the Ohio , which form the border with Indiana and Kentucky, respectively. It has an area of 851 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Gallatin County:

Gallatin

The first white settler was the gunsmith Michael Sprinkle, who settled here shortly before 1800 in what is now Shawneetown. The next settler was Alexander Wilson with his family in 1802. In 1808 or 1809, after several other settlers had moved in, the small town of Shawneetown was founded and a land office was established in 1812.

On September 14, 1812, Gallatin County was formed from former parts of Randolph County, named after Albert Gallatin (1761-1849), a former US Treasury Secretary (1801-1814).

At the same time, the first salt mines were discovered, the yields of which subsequently became the most important commercial product until around 1870. By 1830 the county had a population of 7,400. The peak was reached in 1900 with almost 16,000 inhabitants. After the final end of salt mining, the numbers have steadily decreased to just under 5,600 inhabitants.
