Shawneetown is a small town and the county seat of Gallatin County in southern US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Shawneetown had 1,410 residents. The city has been the county seat since 1937 after what is now called Old Shawneetown was flooded.

The city is about 3 miles northwest of Old Shawneetown on the Ohio River , which forms the border with the neighboring state of Kentucky . The intersection of the three states of Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana is located at the confluence of the Wabash River in the Ohio about 23 km northeast of Shawneetown.

The Illinois State Route 13 runs through Shawneetown from the northwest and crosses the Ohio in Old Shawneetown over the Shawneetown Bridge and leads to Kentucky.

The nearest major cities are 80.1 km east of Evansville , Indiana, and Louisville , further up the Ohio River (263 km) in Kentucky, 255 km southeast of Nashville , Tennessee, and St. Louis, 234 km north-west in Missouri . Illinois' capital, Springfield, is 194 miles to the northwest.

In the 2000 census, the population was 1,410. These were distributed to 632 households in 389 families. The population density was 462.8 / km². There were 675 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 221.6 / km².
