The county is located in western Illinois and is traversed by the La Moine River , a tributary of the Illinois River .
It has an area of 1528 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water.

history
McDonough County was formed on January 25, 1826 from Schuyler County. It was named after Thomas Macdonough , a war hero from the War of 1812 and Commodore in the US Navy.
