The county is located west of central Illinois on the Illinois River and has an area of 994 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

history
Cass County was formed on March 30, 1837 from the northern part of Morgan County. Named after Lewis Cass (1782-1866), a former governor of Michigan - territory (1813-1831), US - War Minister of the USA (1831-1836) and US - Foreign Affairs (1857 to 1860).
In 1837 Cass County had 17 settlements. The houses consisted of simple log cabins with one or two rooms and a fireplace. The first named settler was Eli Cox, who settled here in 1816. The next settler came in 1819 and a short time later half a dozen immigrants from Germany. In 1844 the first courthouse was built.

As of the 2010 census , Cass County had 13,642 people in 5,029 households. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.56 people lived in each of the 5,029 households.
The racial the population was composed of 86.3 percent white, 3.1 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 16.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
24.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.4 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.7 percent were 65 years or older. 49.9 percent of the population was female.
