The county is located in mid-northwest Illinois. It has an area of 746 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water.
The Spoon River , a right tributary of the Illinois River, which flows into the Mississippi, has its source in Stark County .

history
Stark County was formed on March 1, 1839 from Putnam Counties and Knox Counties. It was named after John Stark (1728-1822), an officer in the French and Indian War and later general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .
European immigrants began to settle here in 1829. In 1836 the LaFayette, Osceola and Wyoming settlements were founded. In 1840 the county's population increased to 1576. In 1842 the first court and administration building was built. The building, which is still in use today, was erected in 1856.
