history
Scott County was formed from Morgan County on February 16, 1839.
Scott County's history begins with the Native Americans who settled in the area. The area was first explored by the Europeans in 1673 when Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette came down the Mississippi River from Canada . The next European would have been La Salle , who came via the southern route and began his expedition in 1682 and took possession of the country for France. In 1762 the Treaty of Fontainebleau was signed between the French and the British, whereby all French possessions east of the Mississippi fell to the British.
The occupation by white settlers finally began around 1817. At this point in time the last Kickapoo Indians, often referred to as the Plains Indians, lived here. In 1819 the first family known by name from Kentucky came to the area. It was the Thomas Stephens family with six sons, the eldest three of them also with their own families.
