Chief Keef (born August 15, 1995 in Chicago ; real name Keith Farrelle Cozart ) is an American rapper and music producer . He signed a recording deal with Interscope Records and later with 1017 Brick Squad . Keef is also the founder of his own label, Glory Boyz Entertainment , which was later renamed Glo Gang . His debut album Finally Rich was released on December 18, 2012.

life and career

Childhood (1995-2010)

Chief Keef was born Keith Cozart in the city of Chicago, Illinois. His mother was only 15 years old at the time of his birth. It was named after his late uncle. Chief Keef grew up in the Englewood neighborhood. His biological father did not recognize him. So the legal guardianship was initially transferred to his grandmother. At the age of five he started rapping on his mother's karaoke machine and recorded his first music with blank tapes. During his early childhood he attended Dulles Elementary School and the Banner School. The latter was a therapeutic facility. Keef left Dyett High School at the age of 15.

Early Years, Finally Rich, and subsequent mixtape releases (2011-2013)

In 2011 Keef first achieved regional fame in the southern Chicago rap scene with his first mixtapes The Glory Road and Bang . In December of that year, he shot out of a Pontiac Grand Prix near Washington Park. The police caught him soon after and arrested him for illegally using a weapon . He was later sentenced to 30 days of house arrest at his grandmother's house.

Because of this incident, he gained a lot of attention in the scene. In a short time he published the mixtapes Bang and Back From the Dead and some music videos for the songs Bang , 3Hunna and I Don't Like . The latter was discovered by rapper Kanye West . He remixed the track together with Pusha T , Jadakiss and Big Sean .

In summer 2012 several major labels wanted to sign a record deal with Keef. At the end of 2012, it was Interscope Records that signed the relatively young rapper. One of the parts of the contract on the part of Keef was that he could start his own record label, Glory Boyz Entertainment (GBE). The contract is estimated at $ 6,000,000 for three albums. In addition, around 440,000 US dollars were made available for the establishment of the GBE label. Interscope secured itself with an exit clause. They reserved the right to cancel Keef's contract should his debut album not sell more than 250,000 copies by December 2013. His debut album Finally Rich was finally released on December 18, 2012. Guest contributions came from 50 Cent , Wiz Khalifa , Young Jeezy , Rick Ross and his label member Lil Reese .

On March 26, 2013, it was announced that Keef would be part of the Freshman selection (published by XXL Magazine ). On May 8, 2013, Gucci Mane announced on Twitter that Keef would be a new member of the 1017 Brick Squad Records.

Keef made a guest appearance on the song Hold My Liquor , the fifth track on Kanye West's album, Yeezus . For this contribution he received positive reviews from the musician Lou Reed , who described the song as "heartbreaking".

On his 18th birthday, August 15, 2013, he released the mixtape Bang, Pt. 2 . Bang, Pt. 2 was received as his first project after his debut album. Nevertheless, there were some negative reviews. On October 12, 2013 another mixtape called Almighty Sosa was made available for download. As with Bang, Pt. 2 , this mixtape also received numerous negative reviews.

Bang 3 , Nobody and The Cozart (2014-2016)

In January 2014, the mixtape Bang 3 . announced. Interscope Records' Larry Jackson kept Bang 3's original release date . It should be released on June 10, 2014. But the release date has been postponed again.

In October 2014, the contract between Keef and Interscope Records was terminated . He announced via the short message service Twitter that his planned projects would continue. Young Chop criticized Interscope's decision to fire Keef. Some of the planned mixtapes Bang 3 , Mansion Musick and Thot Breakers have not been released. He published Big Gucci Sosa , along with Gucci Mane . Rolling Stone ranked the album 25th of the 40 best rap albums of 2014. In November 2014, Keef announced Nobody . It featured guest contributions from Kanye West and Tadoe. It was released on December 16, 2014.

retreat

In March 2016, Keef announced on the short message service Twitter that he would withdraw from the rap business. He confirmed his intentions again in a response from a fan as to whether this was true. In 2017 he came back with the mixtape Two Zero One Seven .

controversy

On July 11, 2015, the rapper Capo (Marvin Carr), a member of the Glo Gang label, was shot and killed from a moving car in Chicago. In this incident, the stroller of a 13-month-old baby was hit and died shortly afterwards. Keef announced on Twitter that he would organize a benefit concert. The donation proceeds should go to the baby's family. The mayor Rahm Emanuel then accused Keef of using double standards because his music promoted violence. He forbade Keef from hosting the concert. The concert was then organized in Hammond, Indiana . The Mayor of Hammond, Thomas McDermott, Jr., had the local police turn off the generators. The reason given was a threat to public safety. Commenting on this controversial decision, McDermott said:

“I didn't know anything about Chief Keef. All I heard was that he did a lot of songs about gangs and shooting people - all of this is anti-police, for gangs and for drug use. It was basically banned in Chicago, and we're not going to allow him to circumvent this decision by letting him go to the next door. "

- Thomas McDermott, Jr .:

Erik Zorn of the Chicago Tribune criticized Emmanuel and McDermott for his decisions. In a comment, he argued that Chief Keef's civil rights were violated:

“A Chief Keef also has rights. […] [The] officials in Hammond were wrong in their decision to pull the plug. [...] Do you really want the government to decide who is exemplary enough to be allowed to speak freely? "

- Eric Zorn :

Private life

Keef is the father of two daughters and a son. According to LA Weekly magazine , Keef is said to be a responsible father.

Keef originally lived in Highland Park . He later relocated to Los Angeles.
