history

Some stretches of Interstate 43 existed before being upgraded to Interstate. The southern section to Interstate 894 was formerly known as Wisconsin State Route 15 . The northern section from the intersection with Interstate 94 and Interstate 794 in Milwaukee originally belonged to US Highway 141 . The southernmost part of US 141 became the first section of I-43. The southern stretch of the interstate is known as the Rock Freeway . This is to highlight Milwaukee's connection with Rock County .
