Geography and traffic
Manitowoc lies at 44 ° 5'47 "north latitude and 87 ° 40'30" west longitude and extends over 44.03 km², which is spread over 43.26 km² of land and 0.77 km² of water.
In downtown Manitowoc, US Highway 10 , US Highway 151, and Wisconsin Highway 42 come together. Interstate 43 runs from Green Bay in the north to Milwaukee in the south on the western edge of the city .
The city is located at the confluence of the Manitowoc River with Lake Michigan. There is a 100 km long car ferry service across the lake to Ludington , Michigan . From there, Highway 10 continues east.
Local public transport has been operated since 1978 by the company Maritime Metro Transit, which was founded together with the neighboring town of Two Rivers . MMT currently has a fleet of 12 buses that serve 40 stops on 8 lines.

Worldwide fame
Manitowoc became popular worldwide through the case of Steven Avery , who was innocent in prison for 18 years. After his release, he was charged and convicted of murder, although he again protested his innocence and the evidence against him cast great doubt. In 2015 , the documentary series Making a Murderer was published by Netflix . Several days of trial against Avery on both charges were held in the Manitowoc Courthouse.
In the thirteenth episode of the second season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD series, Phil Colson names Manitowoc as his hometown.
Parts of the Sputnik 4 satellite crashed on a street in Manitowoc in 1962. Today the spot is marked with a metal ring in the asphalt.
