Dream a Little Dream of Me is a song from 1931. The lyrics were written by Gus Kahn , the music by Fabian Andre and Wilbur Schwandt .

Early recordings

Dream a Little Dream of Me was recorded on February 16, 1931 by Ozzie Nelson and Orchestra for Brunswick Records . On February 18 of the same year Wayne King and orchestra recorded the piece for Victor Records ; It was sung by Ernie Birchill. The most famous recording from this period is by Kate Smith . The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 157 cover versions in the field of jazz , among others by Harry James , Louis Armstrong , Joe Newman , Claude Thornhill , Bing Crosby and Teddy Wilson.

Frankie Laine reached the top 20 of the US charts with the song in 1950. In addition, the song was recorded by other well-known singers of the 1940s and 1950s, including Doris Day  - who sang the piece in 1957 as the first female singer to return to the original slow tempo -, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald , Barbara Carroll , the Nat-King- Cole trio, Bing Crosby  - on the 1957 album Bing with a Beat  -, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin , Vaughn Monroe and Dinah Shore .

Cass Elliot recorded

Dream a Little Dream was recorded for the album The Papas & The Mamas , released in April 1968 by the music group The Mamas and the Papas . The group had sung the song several times after band member Michelle Phillips introduced it to the others. Their father was friends with Fabian Andre, who had written the music for Dream a Little Dream with Wilbur Schwandt .

Cass Elliot suggested the band leader John Phillips to record the song. In June 1968, Dunhill Records released the single Dream a Little Dream of Me . The interpreter was Mama Cass with The Mamas and the Papas, in the British publication only Mama Cass was given. The US press advertised the single with a photo of a discreet, but obviously naked, Cass Elliot lying on a bed of daisies. Dream a Little Dream of Me reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1968 . In the United Kingdom , Dream a Little Dream of Me reached number 11 in September 1968, leaving the cover version of Anita Harris (number 33) behind. The song was sold nearly seven million times. National Public Radio took Dream a Little Dream of the hundred most important American musical works of the 20th century in his list. Dream a Little Dream of Me was also included on Cass Elliot's debut solo album, Dream a Little Dream .

After the recording was used in a commercial in 1992, it also developed into a commercial hit in Germany and reached number 5 in the German charts.
