Max Raabe
Max Raabe , actually Matthias Otto (* 12. December 1962 in Luenen ), is a German singer in the vocal category baritone and co-founder and head of the Palast Orchester in Berlin .
Life
Max Raabe gained his first singing experience in a church children's choir in his hometown of Lünen and in the choir of his school. He attended the Clemens Hofbauer College , a boarding school of the Archdiocese of Paderborn . At the age of twenty he moved to West Berlin . He financed his first singing lessons with various odd jobs. From 1988 Raabe studied singing at what was then the Berlin University of the Arts , which he left in 1995 as a state-certified opera singer (baritone).
In 1986 he and friends founded the Palast Orchester , which performed chansons and songs in the style of the 1920s and 1930s. In 1992 he drew attention to himself with the solo performance of Unter den Pines von Argentina in front of the closed curtain in Peter Zadek's production The Blue Angel in the Theater des Westens . He became known to a larger audience in 1994 through his appearance in the film comedy The Moving Man together with the Palast Orchester. Two years later his first engagement as a film actor followed in the role of Attila in the television film Charley's Tante .
In addition to tours and ball appearances with the Palast Orchester, Max Raabe can also be heard as a soloist; he is accompanied by the pianist Christoph Israel and also performs his own compositions. Raabe appeared in some classic productions:
- 1994 as Dr. Settlers in the Berlin production of the Pfister siblings of Ralph Benatzky's operetta Im Weißen Rößl .
- As a soloist in a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana in Berlin .
- 1999 as Mackie Messer in a CD production by Bertolt Brechts and Kurt Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper (with Nina Hagen and HK Gruber ).
In 2004 he made the soundtrack for the film Die Reise ins Glück with Tellerlip Girl . In 2005 he first appeared in New York's Carnegie Hall , and on June 13th he received the Paul-Lincke-Ring of the city of Goslar in Hahnenklee . In December 2005 the wedding of Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese was accompanied by music. In 2006 Raabe took over a dubbing voice in the animated film The Little Red Riding Hood Conspiracy .
In 2008 Raabe went on tour under the motto Tonight or Never . In 2010 he toured Israel with concerts in Tel Aviv-Jaffa , Jerusalem and Haifa . The concerts were particularly enthusiastically received by Jeckes , i.e. Israelis of German origin. Raabe's standard repertoire includes numerous songs by Jewish composers and lyricists who were formative for German popular music before 1933. The documentary film made by Sönke Wortmann for the tour premiered in 2012 at the 18th Jewish Film Festival Berlin & Potsdam.
In 2011 Raabe released the album You can't kiss it alone , which climbed into the German, Swiss and Austrian charts and even made it into the top 20 of the Swedish charts. In the same year he could be seen on Sesame Street at Ernie & Bert Songs.
On January 11, 2013, his album For women is no problem , which was produced again in collaboration with Annette Humpe .
Raabe lives in Berlin-Mitte.

Reviews
“This voice comes from nowhere. In the darkness of the Berlin Admiralspalast [...] you hardly feel a breath when the singer starts to read the first verse of the opening song [...]. [...] It lets the sound swell, gives it a resonance without physicality, without any trembling or whimpering, without any inkling of a clatter. "
“Basically, of course, you have to like this somewhat old-fashioned humor, the songs of this era, in order to love Raabe. However, "Übers Meer" proves once again that there is currently hardly a similarly accomplished chronicler of German songs. "
