Morna Anne Murray , CC , ONS (* 20th June 1945 in Springhill , Nova Scotia ) is an award with the Grammy excellent Canadian Country - singer . In the course of her 40-year career, Murray sold over 14 million albums in the United States alone. Her biggest hit, You Needed Me , reached number one on the US charts in 1978 .
Career
Murray grew up as the only girl out of five brothers. She started out as a singer on the television series Singalong Jubilee . At that time she was still working full-time as a physical education teacher.
In 1968 she recorded her first album , What About Me, on a small, independent label . The music label Capitol Records noticed her and in 1969 offered her a contract . The first single Snowbird was already an international hit. It achieved high placements in both the pop and country charts .
It took a few years before she was able to place herself in the top 10 again in 1972 with Danny's song . In 1974 she had her first number one hit in the country charts with He Thinks I Still Care . In 1975 she received a Grammy for Love Song . In the same year she married. In 1976 Murray gave birth to their son William, in 1979 she gave birth to their daughter Dawn, who works as both a singer and a painter under the name Dawn Langstroth.
With You Needed Me , Murray had another number 1 hit in 1978, this time on the pop charts. This was followed by I Just Fall in Love Again as part of a long series of hits that lasted until the mid-1980s. In July 1989 the Anne Murray Center opened in Springhill, where she was born. The 6,894 square meter museum houses memorabilia from Murray's 40+ year career, a gift shop, and multi-purpose rooms where events take place. The center is open from mid-May to mid-October and has received over 400,000 visitors since 1989.
In 1993 she was honored with induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame . In the late 1990s she made a comeback in the USA with the CD What a Wonderful World: 26 Inspirational Classics .
In November 2007 the album Anne Murray Duets Friends & Legends was released , on which Murray sings her most successful tracks as duets with well-known colleagues such as Shania Twain , Martina McBride , Nelly Furtado or Emmylou Harris and her daughter Dawn Langstroth.
Two years later, Anne Murray announced in several interviews as part of the promotion of her autobiography All of Me that she would retire from show business. She ruled out further concerts, television appearances and albums.
In 2010, Murray was allowed to carry the Olympic flag into the stadium with seven other celebrities as part of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver .
