Martina McBride
Martina McBride (born July 29, 1966 in Sharon , Kansas ; born Martina Mariea Schiff ) is an American country singer who has been one of the most successful artists of her genre since the mid-1990s. At the CMA Awards , the most important distinction in country, she has been named “Singer of the Year” four times. In addition, she has been nominated 14 times for a Grammy , but has not yet received an award. McBride has sold more than 18 million albums worldwide.
Life
McBride grew up in typical rural areas of the American Midwest. As a child, she was enthusiastic about country music at an early age, but also liked the rock stars of the time. In high school, she gained her first experience in bands before appearing as a professional singer in Wichita , Kansas in the mid-1980s . In 1988 she married John McBride and moved to Nashville with him in 1990 . During this time she was already working intensively on her first demo tape, while her husband worked for artists such as Charlie Daniels , Ricky Van Shelton and Garth Brooks .
In the early 1990s, McBride signed a recording deal with RCA Records and released their debut album The Time Has Come in 1992 . The production was traditional compared to later albums and only sold modestly. The title song was her first top 40 hit in the country charts, and other releases (including the drinker ballad Cheap Whiskey ) made McBride popular, but only partially successful.
My Baby Loves Me was her first big hit in the American country charts in 1993 (number 2). The accompanying album The Way That I Am sold more than a million copies and stayed in the country album charts for over 100 weeks. The song Independence Day , written by Gretchen Peters , is the story of a girl who has to experience violence in her family. A little later, it was one of Martina McBride's greatest successes and received the CMA Award for "Song Of The Year 1995".
The album Wild Angels (1995) threw the title song, written by colleague Matraca Berg , for the first time a number 1 hit in the charts. McBride's albums sold steadily better, they now had stronger pop shares: Evolution 1997 brought it to over four million units, while Greatest Hits 2001 also reached the top ten of the pop album charts for the first time, as did her album Martina in 2003. On the latter album she oriented herself more towards the country genre after the album Emotion (1999) had little to do with it. Timeless , published in 2005, contains only well-known country classics that were largely recorded traditionally and document McBride's return to the genre. The singer has now sold over 13 million records in the United States alone. In 2009 her album Shine was released . In 2011 McBride released her eleventh studio album Eleven ; McBride wrote most of the songs himself. The singles Teenage Daughters and I'm Gonna Love You Though It are the biggest hits in years. In 2012 she released the single Marry Me , a duet with Train frontman Pat Monathan .
After 2009, McBride's long-term collaboration with the RCA label ended . As a result, she began to record albums for different labels, which could no longer quite build on the old successes. While it continued to do well in the album charts, it hasn't had any hits in the country or pop charts since 2011. That year she celebrated her first top 10 success since 2007 with I'm Gonna Love You Through It .
In 2005 McBride recorded an album of country classics. Timeless is a collection of 18 country songs, including legendary songs of the genre such as Don Gibson's I Can't Stop Loving You , Johnny Cash's I Still Miss Someone or Joe South's (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden . The album, which also features guest stars such as Dolly Parton , Dwight Yoakam and Rhonda Vincent , was awarded platinum and reached number one on the country and number three on the pop charts. McBride took up the concept of interpreting classics again in 2014 with Everlasting . This time, however, she covered well-known soul evergreens such as If You Don't Know Me by Now by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes or Do Right Woman, Do Right Man by Aretha Franklin. McBride was able to win Gavin DeGraw and Kelly Clarkson as duet partners for the work produced by Don Was . This album also reached number one on the country charts. A novelty, because McBride was the first singer who managed to rank first with an indie release.
2016 studio album was released Reckless at Nash icon , a label that older country stars such as Reba McEntire , Ronnie Dunn and Hank Williams Jr. under contract.
Success outside of the US
Martina McBride has had her greatest success so far in the US country market. Already at the beginning of her career, the singer made attempts to conquer abroad. In 1994 she accompanied America's greatest country star Garth Brooks on tour through Europe and visited Germany in this context. From 1993 her albums for the German market were partly released with different covers and a different track list. The use of the song I Love You in the film The Bride Who Doesn't Dare (1999) helped McBride achieve greater success in Germany for the first time. As the only single so far, it reached number 79 in the German charts.
