Kelly Clarkson (2013)

Kelly Brianne Clarkson (born April 24, 1982 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is an American pop singer . She won the first season of the American talent show American Idol in 2002 and is a multiple Grammy award winner. By 2014 she sold over 24 million albums and 39 million singles; she is the most successful participant in a casting show.

Childhood and personal life

Clarkson was born in Fort Worth, grew up in burleson and lives in Mansfield and Nashville . She has two older birth siblings, a brother and a sister, and nine step-siblings. When she was six years old, her parents divorced; afterwards she lived with her mother. During her childhood, Clarkson learned to play the piano and violin. In middle school , on the advice of a teacher, she became a member of the school choir and began to be interested in a music career.

After graduating from high school , she moved to Los Angeles with a friend , played minor television roles and worked briefly with songwriter Gerry Goffin . After Goffin fell ill and burned out her apartment, she returned to Texas penniless and kept herself afloat with various jobs (in the zoo, as an usher, as a promoter for Red Bull , as a bartender, etc.). She also worked as an entertainer in an amusement park, where she starred in a western show.

On October 20, 2013, Clarkson married her fiancé, Brandon Blackstock, with whom she has been dating since 2011. In 2014 a daughter was born; A son followed in 2016.

Career

2002-2004: American Idol and Thankful

In 2002, at the insistence of a friend, Clarkson applied for the casting show American Idol (adapted in Germany as Deutschland sucht den Superstar ) and was selected from 10,000 applicants as one of 30 participants for the second round. This made her one of the ten candidates for the actual television show. On September 4, 2002, she won the American Idol final with 58% of the audience vote against Justin Guarini . After the finale, she signed a contract with RCA Records .

Her first single, A Moment Like This , reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2002 . Her first album Thankful was released in April 2003, sold more than 2.1 million copies in the United States, and went double platinum. There were 4.5 million sales worldwide. In 2003, Clarkson and Justin Guarini starred in the film From Justin to Kelly , which was unsuccessful. She was also able to establish herself in the UK , Australia and Canada with her first international single, Miss Independent , which earned her a Grammy nomination in 2004 . At the World Idol show , in which the winners of the pop idol formats competed against each other, she came second behind the Norwegian Kurt Nilsen . In the US, Clarkson reached number 58 with her other singles Low and number 101 with The Trouble with Love Is .

2004–2006: International success with Breakaway

At the end of 2004 her second album, Breakaway , was released, among other things produced by Max Martin with a focus on rock instead of soul pop, which has sold around ten million times worldwide and reached five times platinum in the USA. The video, shot by Vadim Perelman , went from zero to one on the US trial charts and won an MTV Video Music Award . On February 8, 2006, she was awarded two Grammys in Los Angeles for Best Pop Vocal Performance with Since U Been Gone and for Best Pop Vocal Album for her album Breakaway . In Germany she made an appearance at Wetten, dass ..? In front of more than 20 million television viewers, she presented her third single Because of You , which helped her album and single to reach the German top five and be awarded gold. The album later went platinum. In addition, her single reached number one on the German airplay charts . Clarkson was also able to place her album and single in the top 10 in Switzerland and Austria.

In the summer of 2006, Clarkson toured the United States for the fourth time with the Addicted Summer Tour . 2007–2010: My December and All I Ever Wanted

The first single, Never Again, from Clarkson's third studio album, My December , was also released in Germany on June 1, 2007, after it had its premiere on April 13 on US radio stations. The album My December was first released in German-speaking countries and Italy and on June 26, 2007 in the USA. Clarkson also supported Live Earth , which took place on July 7th. The start of their My December tour, announced for summer 2007, has been postponed to October due to sluggish ticket sales. From March 2008 to mid-April she toured Australia and Europe. The second single Sober was released on July 10, 2007 in the US ; it reached number 10 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 singles chart. One Minute was released in Australia on September 22, 2007 . Don't Waste Your Time became the second single in Europe and Canada . In April 2008, Clarkson sang during Pope Benedict XVI 's visit to the United States . in Yonkers .

In March 2009 her fourth album All I Ever Wanted was released . Before that, the single My Life Would Suck Without You came on the market at the end of January , with which it set a new US chart record: In the February 7, 2009 issue of the Billboard Hot 100 , it rose from number 97 to number one with 280,000 downloads. Sales in the first week of release. The second single was I Do Not Hook Up . The song was written by Katy Perry and was originally planned for her own album, which was not released at the time. Already Gone got a lot of media attention, as the song was reminiscent of the song Halo previously released by Beyoncé . Ryan Tedder, who wrote both songs, rejected the speculation. All I Ever Wanted , the album's title track, was released as the fourth and final single in the US and Canada.

2011–2012: Stronger

In October 2011 the album Stronger and the first single from it, Mr. Know It All , was released. In the first few weeks, Mr. Know It All made it to number 40 in the German single charts and ultimately reached number 18. In Australia the song was number one. The album debuted at number 14 on the German album charts. In December 2011 the album was awarded gold in the USA. The second single, Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) was released on December 14, 2011, reached number 1 in the US, making it Clarkson's third number 1 hit. The single was released in Germany on February 17, 2012.

For the album Up All Night by the British-Irish boy group One Direction, Clarkson wrote the song Tell Me a Lie , which was actually planned for their fifth album Stronger . She also released a cover version of I'll Be Home for Christmas in December 2011 , which reached number 93 in the US with 24,000 downloads in the first week. The accompanying EP iTunes Session was released on December 23, 2011 and came with 13,000 copies sold at number 85 on the Billboard 200. At the Billboard Music Awards 2012, she presented the single Dark Side , which was released on June 5, 2012. On November 19, 2012, her first greatest hits album, Greatest Hits: Chapter One, was released . The first single from it was called Catch My Breath and was released on October 16. The second single Don't Rush is a duet with Vince Gill and was released on October 30th. The third single from the Greatest Hits album Greatest Hits: Chapter One is People Like Us , which was released on April 8, 2013 in the USA. At the inauguration of US President Barack Obama on January 21, 2013, Clarkson sang the patriotic song My Country, 'Tis of Thee . Another single, Tie It Up , was released on June 25, 2013 .

2013–2016: Wrapped in Red and Piece by Piece

Clarkon's first Christmas album, Wrapped in Red , was released in late October 2013 . The album sold more than 60,000 copies in its first week and went platinum in December. The album's first single, Underneath the Tree , was released on November 5th. On December 11th, the American broadcaster NBC broadcast the Christmas television show Kelly Clarkson's Cautionary Christmas Music Tale . Also in 2013, Clarkson recorded the song Little Green Apples with Robbie Williams for his studio album Swings Both Ways .

At the end of February 2015, their album Piece by Piece was released , which reached the top of the American album charts. It is Clarkson's third number one album in the US and went gold in early 2016. Piece by Piece reached the top 10 in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, and 30th in Germany. The single Heartbeat Song was released in January . The tour of the same name had to be ended prematurely because of Clarkson's second pregnancy. In 2016 the album was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Pop Vocal Album , the single Heartbeat Song in the category Best Pop Vocal Performance .

At the end of 2016, Clarkson took part in the Hamilton Mixtape with the song It's Quiet Uptown , a compilation by various artists with songs from the musical Hamilton , which reached number one on the American album charts.

Since 2017: Meaning of Life and The Voice

In early 2017, a soundtrack song for The Shack , a duet with Aloe Blacc , was released, and on October 27, 2017, Clarkson released her eighth studio album, Meaning of Love . In November she recorded a cover version of the Prince song Purple Rain . They also opened the 2017 American Music Awards and sang with P! Nk Everybody Hurts by REM to honor first responders and emergency services.

In 2018 her song Love So Soft was nominated for a Grammy in the category "Best Pop Solo Performance", thus Clarkson holds the record for most nominations in this category. She has been nominated four times so far. In March 2018 she published a sung version of the children's book "I've Loved You Since Forever" by Hoda Kotd. Clarkson has also been appointed coach for the fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth seasons of The Voice USA . She also hosted and sang at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards . On September 19, 2018, it was announced that Clarkson would host her own talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, on NBC from 2019 .

On April 16, 2020, Clarkson released her single I Dare You as a multilingual collaboration project in which she sang the song in their native language with several other artists in addition to the English version. So she brought out a French (with Zaz ), a Moroccan-Arabic (with Faouzia ), a Spanish (with Blas Cantó ), a Hebrew (with Maya Buskila ) and a German version, the latter she sang with Carolin Niemczyk from Glasperlenspiel .
