David Roland Cook (born December 20, 1982 in Houston , Texas ) is an American singer-songwriter and musician . In 2008, he won the seventh season of American Idol . Shortly afterwards, on November 18th, he released his first studio album, which was named after him. It has sold over a million copies, and achieved platinum status in the United States and gold status in Canada. His second studio album was released on June 28, 2011 and is called This Loud Morning. The single The Last Goodbye was released in advance .

Life

David Cook was born in Houston (Texas) on 20 December 1982 and grew up in Blue Springs ( Missouri on). His parents are Beth Foraker (nee Frye) and Stanley Cook. He is the middle of three brothers - his older brother Adam Cook and younger brother Andrew Cook.

He got a guitar at the age of two . In the second grade, he started in the school choir with the singing of. At Blue Springs South High School he played in various musicals , including The Music Man , West Side Story and Singin 'in the Rain . He also enjoyed playing baseball there . After Cook was no longer interested in sports, he focused more on music. He received a theater scholarship from the University of Central Missouri ; However, changed the course after two semesters. In 2006 he graduated with a degree in graphic design . During his college years he was a member of the Fraternity Phi Sigma Kappa . After graduation, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to pursue his music career. He told his mother, "I'll give myself the chance until I'm 26 years old, before I find a job". After American Idol, Cook moved to Los Angeles, California . Since 2013 he has lived in Nashville ( Tennessee )

People reported on March 31, 2009 that Cook is canceling shows on his ongoing tour for family reasons. Cook's older brother, Adam, who had had a brain tumor since 1998, died on May 2, 2009. On May 3, 2009, during his first participation in the Race for Hope in Washington, DC, Cook announced his brother's death during a speech and said that he couldn't imagine being anywhere else ("couldn't imagine being anywhere else right now."). His team raised $ 136,376.16 to research a cure for brain tumors. During the season 8 finale, American Idol , Cook sang his song "Permanent" in honor of his brother. A recording of the performance was posted on iTunes and the proceeds were also donated to brain tumor research. In May 2015, Cook will take part in the “Race for Hope” in Washington, DC for the seventh time. To date, Cook and his team have raised a total of over $ 1 million for brain cancer research. Cook and his fans celebrated reaching the 1 million dollar mark on December 2, 2014 at a special concert in Vienna, Virginia. Fans around the world were able to participate via online stream.

His musical influences include: a. Our Lady Peace , Alice in Chains , Big Wreck , Pearl Jam , Bon Jovi , Chris Cornell , The Goo Goo Dolls , Switchfoot , and Collective Soul . Right after winning American Idol, Cook was asked Backstage by Entertainment Weekly who his top 5 bands were. The bands mentioned were Our Lady Peace, Big Wreck, Foo Fighters , Jimmy Eat World and 8stops7 .

Musical career

Cook was the front man and guitarist for the band Axium from 1999 to 2006 , which he formed with drummer Bobby Kerr while in high school . Axiums song Hold was developed by AMC Theaters Movie Tunes selected and in more than 20,000 cinemas in the US before previews played. In 2004 Axium were named the best band in Kansas City , Missouri, and won the “ Got Milk? “- Promotional campaign named one of the 15 best indie bands in the country. He has released four albums with Axium - Matter of Time , Blindsided , Alive in Tulsa and The Story Thus Far .

In 2006, Axium split and Cook went to Tulsa , Oklahoma to join the band MidWest Kings . In the same year they recorded an EP called Incoherent with Desire to Move On .

In 2006 he released his first solo album called Analog Heart , on which he wrote from 2004 to 2006 and whose artwork he designed. The website musicequalslife.com named Analog Heart the fourth best publication of the year.

In 2007, Cook won the Absolute Best of Tulsa award from Urban Tulsa Weeklys for Best Locally Produced, Independent Album . He recorded his second album before American Idol.

Over the weekend of April 18-20, 2008, Analog Heart was number one in the Today's Top MP3 Albums category on amazon.com , ousting Mariah Carey's album E = MC² from the top position. A day later, however, Amazon removed the album from the website .

Post idol

2008-2009: David Cook

Cook worked with Espionage, Ed Roland ( Collective Soul ), Zac Maloy ( The Nixons ), Jason Wade ( Lifehouse ), Neal Tiemann (the Midwest Kings), Kevin Griffin ( Better Than Ezra ), Chantal Kreviazuk, and Raine Maida ( Our Lady Peace ) on his major label debut album named after him. The album was produced by Rob Cavallo. On September 5, 2008, when American Idol host Ryan Seacrest's On Air of KIIS-FM radio broadcast, he announced that the album would be released on November 18, 2008.

The album's first single, Light On , was released on September 23, 2008. On October 10, 2008, the single landed at # 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. Light On went platinum on January 20, 2010 in the US. Later on, Come Back to Me and Bar-ba-sol were released in parallel for HAC Radio and Rock Radio. The music video for "Come Back to Me" premiered on April 4, 2009.

His debut album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association for America (RIAA) in January 2009 for over one million sales. He received the award during an appearance on the current American Idol season.

On January 23, 2009, his first US headlining tour, the Declaration Tour, was announced. His former bandmates, Midwest Kings (MWK), Andy Skib (rhythm guitar, keyboard and background vocals) and Neil Tiemann (lead guitar) became part of his band. The other band members were Joey Clement (later replaced by Monty Anderson) on bass and Kyle Peek on drums and backing vocals. The tour began on February 13, 2009 in Tallahassee, Florida and was originally scheduled to end on April 25, 2009 in Tulsa, Oklahoma . The tour was extended twice - first to May 31, 2009 and then again from June 18, 1009 to December 1, 2009, with a conclusion in Charlotte ( North Carolina ) after a total of 153 shows. On August 14, 2009, David Cook played his 100th show at the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville ( Tennessee ).

2010-2011: This Loud Morning

After the Declaration Tour ended in December 2009, Cook began working on his second major album. He worked with Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk, Matt Squire, Gregg Wattenberg, John Rzeznik, Sam Hollander & Dave Katz, Claude Kelly, Brian Howes, David Hodges, Tommy Henriksen, Steven Van Zandt, Kevin Griffin, Zac Maloy, Ryan Tedder, Jim Irvin, Jamie Jamie Houston, Ryan Star & Julian Emery and Max Martin. He also worked on new material with his band mates Neal Tiemann and Andy Skib. During an interview with HitQuarters taped in March, producer-songwriter Steve Mac said that Cook recently went to Rokstone Studios in London, where he worked with Mac as well as Savan Kotecha and Andrew Frampton. Cook originally hoped to release the first single in April 2010 and the album in the summer of 2010. A producer for the album wasn't announced until May, however, and recording began in June with producer Matt Serletic. In March 2011, Cook announced on Twitter that The Last Goodbye, the first single, would be released on April 19, 2011. In April 2011, the name of the album This Loud Morning was announced for June 28, 2011.

In September 2011 a co-headlining tour with Gavin DeGraw and Carolina Liar as support was announced. The tour began on October 9, 2011 at State College, Pennsylvania and ended after 22 shows in 15 states on November 10, 2011 in Athens, Georgia . During the gate, the second single Fade into Me was released. During the tour, Devin Bronson replaced Neal Tiemann as lead guitarist.

2012-present: Separation of RCA and third studio album

On May 10, 2012, Cook presented his new song The Last Song I'll Write for You on the 11th season of American Idol. Before the performance, he confirmed to Shirley Halperin from the Hollywood Reporter that after separating from RCA he is without a record deal and will independently publish The Last Song I'll Write for You . On April 30, 2013 Cook released the new single Laying Me Low , with the help of XIX Recordings , the label of American Idol inventor Simon Fuller . Cook is currently working on his third studio album, which is expected in early 2015.

Cook was one of the songwriters for country musician David Nails' single Kiss You Tonight , which was released on his 2014 album I'm a Fire .

On October 25, 2014 Cook tweeted a picture of himself in the studio and on October 27, 2014 the message “So stoked to be sharing this new music with you. Here we go! " along with a link to an excerpt from a new song with the words “Coming Soon”. On November 4, 2014 the release of the new single "Wait For Me" for November 17, 2014 was announced.

On March 24th, it was announced that Cook had signed a publishing deal with Warner / Chappell Music .

On June 23, 2015, the new album title Digital Vein and the corresponding song list were released. Digital Vein was released on September 18, 2015.

American Idol

Cook sang in Omaha ( Nebraska before), even though he initially wanted only support his younger brother Andrew.

Since the American Idol participants were allowed to play musical instruments for the first time in the seventh season , Cook often accompanied his singing with an acoustic or electric guitar .

He was a jury favorite throughout the season and received good reviews .

On May 20, 2008 he was in the final against David Archuleta . A day later, he was named the winner with 56% and twelve million more votes. In total, the record number of 97.5 million calls and SMS was received . Cook is the fifth winner after Kelly Clarkson (S1), Carrie Underwood (S4), Taylor Hicks (S5) and Jordin Sparks (S6), which never (under the last two or three English bottom two or three ) came. He is also the second winner after Ruben Studdard (S2), who sang first during the finals. Overall, he is the third male winner and the first from the Midwest .

Within hours of the finale, his first single, The Time of My Life, debuted at number one on iTunes . The songs he sung during the finale, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For , The World I Know and Dream Big, followed in second to fourth place.

On the Billboard Hot 100 , he was able to place eleven of his casting show songs between number 3 and 99 in the first week.

His picture was on the cover of The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2009 alongside President Barack Obama and Senator John McCain.

He played a white left-handed electric guitar made for him by Gibson Les Paul .
