E = MC² is the eleventh studio album by multiple Grammy winner Mariah Carey . It was released by the record label Island Records , executive producers were Mariah Carey and Antonio "LA" Reid . The album was released on April 15, 2008.

Album title

The abbreviation E = MC² means “emancipation is equal to Mariah Carey in the square”. It is a play on words with Albert Einstein's well-known formula about the equivalence of mass and energy . The title is also a tribute to their 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi .

Before the official title was confirmed, the plan was to name the album That Chick after one of the tracks on it.

On the cover of E = MC² Mariah Carey is only covered with a long white scarf.

Production history

Mariah Carey reported while on tour The Adventures of Mimi that she was already working on her new album. She spent some time shooting in the Virgin Islands . On February 1, 2008, a video of Mariah and producer Jermaine Dupri during a session in Carey's TriBeCa triplex was published on Mariah Carey's official website .

Other producers include Bryan Michael Cox , Polow Da Don and will.i.am . At the end of 2007 Mariah Carey selected the pieces for the album from the available material.

Music and lyrics

The music on the album comes from areas such as pop , R&B and hip-hop , but some songs also contain elements of gospel and reggae . On the song Side Effects , she talks about her marriage to Tommy Mottola , which she describes as “private hell”, as well as the “emotional abuse” she saw during this time and the aftermath she still suffers today. MTV author Jennifer Vineyard calls the song a "Rock Power Ballad" and compares this music with that of Bonnie Tyler and Pat Benatar .

I'm That Chick features melodies from Michael Jackson's Off the Wall . The song I'll Be Lovin 'U Long Time sampled DeBarges Stay with Me (as well as a quote from a Vietnamese prostitute from Full Metal Jacket ) as well as melodic parts of the theme song from Hill Street Blues . The second single Bye Bye is about the death of her father, Alfred Roy, who died of cancer in 2002, and how she missed him in her childhood. Although the text is very personal, it tries to treat the topic universally so that anyone who has lost someone can understand it. The last song, I Wish You Well, is a piano ballad with a slight gospel touch. The song quotes the Bible in some places.

Reviews

The biggest challenge of this album was to maintain the quality of the previous album, which was seen positively in most of the reviews.

According to Billboard Magazine , which describes E = MC² as “a pop album with equal parts of ease and depth”, Mariah Carey “never sounded as free as on her 10th album”. MTV praised the songs Side Effects and I Wish You Well and said that “Carey sang best when she doesn't do vocalistic exercises but keeps the singing simple”.
