history

background

The DeBarge musical family was originally from Detroit , then moved to Grand Rapids , Michigan . The parents were white-skinned Robert DeBarge Sr., who ruled his family and bullied and abused his eight children, and his submissive and religious wife, Etterlene.

The children Bobby and Tommy DeBarge were part of the Switch group founded in 1977 by Bernd Lichters from Hamburg together with Jody Sims, Greg Williams, Phillip Ingram and Eddie Fuellen in Mansfield (Ohio) . They produced a demo tape which Jermaine Jackson received, who discovered the group. They got a record deal with Motown and landed quite successful hits in the US R&B charts . Bobby was already taking hard drugs at that time.

The early years (1979–1981)

Bernd Lichters also discovered the singing talents of the other family members. With the 1979 release of SMASH by Source / MCA in the USA and Canada (first published in 1977 in Germany under 'Pall Mall Groove' HOT ICE by Polydor), El, Mark, Randy, James and Bunny, the DeBarges' only girl, moved from Michigan to Los Angeles. In 1980 El DeBarge played 'live' the family's compositions on the piano in the Motown office in the presence of Berry Gordy and sang along with them. So they got record contracts with Motown and formed DeBarge in 1980 . In 1981 their debut album The DeBarges was released , which, however, largely fell short of success expectations.

The great successes (1982–1985)

After James DeBarge joined the band, the album All This Love and its releases were Stop! Don't Tease Me , I Like It and All This Love are much more successful. The songs became particularly popular in the US R&B charts.

The follow-up album In a Special Way was able to continue the success. The singles Time Will Reveal and Love Me in a Special Way were released.

In the mid-1990s and later, several tracks from the album were widely used and sampled in other tracks, including Stay With Me by The Notorious BIG in One More Chance (1995) and Ashanti in Foolish (2002); and A Dream by 2Pac in I Ain't Mad At Cha (1996) and by Blackstreet in Don't Leave Me (1996). The album is still being distributed as a CD. In the same year, DeBarge appeared on the special television show Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever .

In 1985, after a productive tour, DeBarge made international breakthroughs with the album Rhythm of the Night . A total of four singles were released: Rhythm of the Night , Who's Holding Donna Now , You Wear It Well and The Heart Is Not So Smart .

Dissolution (1986–1989)

Similar to the Jackson Five ten years earlier, the success of the DeBarge family was based on the popularity of a few singles. The low level of involvement of the family members - with the exception of El - and the intensive drug consumption as a result of the family structure destroyed by abuse and violence led to a break. Lead singer El DeBarge, who also wrote and produced the tracks, left the band in 1986. After sister Bunny left the band, the other members hoped to repeat the success of Rhythm of the Night . They left Motown and switched to the Striped Horse label in 1987 . In contrast to the previous albums, the album Bad Boys disappointed : the releases Dance All Night (33) and You Babe (33) were only placed very low in the US R&B charts. With the conviction that they could not start a single comeback, the band broke up in 1989. In addition, some members suffered from their drug problems, so James DeBarge: He had struggled with his problem since his short marriage to Janet Jackson from 1984 to 1985, but in the mid-1990s he successfully completed a rehabilitation program with recovery.

While the siblings Bunny, Mark, Randy and El DeBarge continued the band unsuccessfully - the album Back on Track disappointed just like its predecessor. - the other siblings Darryl, Carol "Peaches", Tommy and Chico DeBarge pursued their own musical careers. From 1986 Bunny and El also started solo projects. After El achieved a one-hit wonder with his song Who's Johnny , he received some attention as a guest singer on works by other artists, especially for Quincy Jones and Marvin Gaye . Meanwhile, his sister Bunny became addicted to drug use after she quit .

The following years

Chico DeBarge, neither band member switch or DeBarge was his music career in 1986 started with the hit Talk to Me and released after a prison sentence - he also because of drug - 1998 another album, which achieved some success.

El DeBarge was arrested multiple times for drug offenses and spent several years in prison.

Michael Jackson saved James DeBarge's life several times when he attempted suicide. Five of the DeBarges were or are addicted to drugs.

In 1995, Bobby DeBarge died of AIDS at the age of 39 .
