Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas (born October 13, 1980 in Glen Cove , Long Island , New York ) is an American singer , dancer , songwriter and actress .

biography

At the age of six, the daughter of a dance teacher and a singer began singing in the local gospel choir . In parallel, she received professional dance training at the Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center, which helped her take part in local TV talent shows. Discovered by an agent, Ashanti later appeared in Carnegie Hall , in various music videos and the Disney television musical Polly .

At the age of 14 she signed her first record deal with Jive Records , but the collaboration had no consequences and Ashanti switched to Epic Records three years later . There she met Irv Gotti , producer and boss of Murder-Inc. -Know sub-labels who decided to sign the singer for his combo. As a result, Ashanti was first heard as the chorus voice on her colleague Ja Rule's No. 1 single Always on Time in late 2001 ; a little later, rapper Fat Joe was also able to convince her to take part in his release What's Luv? to sing.

In the wake of the success of both co-productions, Ashanti released her self-titled debut album in the summer of 2002. The first solo single Foolish became a worldwide hit and immediately made it to number one on the US charts ; it stayed there for eleven weeks, making it the most successful single of the year. With Happy and Baby , two more successful couplings followed. The record itself sold over six million copies and was awarded a Grammy in 2003 .

At the beginning of 2003 Ashanti could be heard again as a single feature for Ja Rule ( Mesmerize ) and Fabolous ( Into You ) before she announced her second album Chapter II with the first release Rock wit U in the summer . Both the record and the singles taken from it could not come close to the success of the debut, but are among the best-selling or -played releases of the year. With Ashanti's Christmas of the year was followed by a Christmas album.

In 2004 her third album Concrete Rose was released. The CD reached number seven on the American album charts and was awarded platinum , but fell far short of expectations, especially internationally, and was not further promoted by Def Jam Records after the hit Only U and the moderate success of the second single Don't Let Them .

Ashanti himself, meanwhile, devoted himself to acting. In the same year she appeared as a supporting actress in the Bollywood film Bride and Prejudice ; with Coach Carter , she had a box office hit in spring 2005. She then released her first remix album, Collectables .

In 2007 the singer finished recording her fourth studio album The Declaration , which was released in spring 2008 and on which she collaborated with Babyface , Polow Da Don, Pharrell Williams , Swizz Beatz , Dr. Dre and Robin Thicke worked. The first single is titled The Way That I Love You . Ashanti was in a relationship with rapper Nelly from 2003 until the end of 2012 .

Ashanti released a single called The Woman You Love , a feature with Busta Rhymes , in 2012 . It is a promo single for the Braveheart album . The album's lead single is Never Should Have . The second song I Got It was released with Rick Ross .
