action
The middle-class Bakshi family from the Indian city of Amritsar has four wonderful daughters: Jaya, Lalita, Maya and Lakhi. Mama Bakshi wants to get her daughters under the hood as soon as possible. When the charming foreign Indian Balraj Bingley visits with his friend William Darcy, Mama Bakshi thinks that Balraj would be the perfect match for Jaya. Jaya also takes a liking to him and he feels the same for her.
The arrogant, rich, American hotel owner William Darcy, who is not exactly an "India fan", is pretty much insulted by the Indian folk dances. No wonder he gets a basket from Lalita. But then Lalita has to accompany him, Balraj, Jaya and Balraj's sister Kiran on a trip to the city of Goa , where she meets the destitute American Johnny. The son of Darcy's former nanny, Johnny tells Lalita that Darcy treated him badly.
Back in Amritsar, Mama Bakshi already has plans for Lalita to marry Mr. Kholi, an Indian who made money in the USA. But Mr. Kholi is a pretty annoying and arrogant guy with whom Lalita doesn't want to have anything to do with. Then Johnny shows up again and flirts with Lalita, but makes a lot more impression on her little sister Lakhi. At the same time, Lalita can't stop thinking about Darcy.
Finally, Darcy and Balraj leave and Balraj no longer reports to Jaya, which the whole Bakshi family is very disappointed with. Johnny also disappears again. Lalita manages to get rid of Mr. Kholi, who then proposes to Lalita's best friend Chandra Lamba, which she accepts.
The entire Bakshi family is invited to Mr. Kholi and Chandra Lamba’s wedding in California. First the family flies to London to meet Balraj again, who is absent. Instead, Lakhi secretly meets with Johnny there. In California, Lalita meets Darcy again, who owns the hotel where the wedding is taking place. Lalita and Darcy get closer and closer and have a romantic time, but then Lalita learns from Darcy's sister Georgie that it was Darcy who advised his friend Balraj not to contact Jaya again. Lalita then turns away from Darcy, although Darcy confesses his love to her.
The Bakshi family flies back to London. There Lakhi leaves the house with a lie and runs off with Johnny. Darcy arrives shortly afterwards. He apologizes for his mistakes with Lalita and explains to her that he only advised Balraj not to contact Jaya anymore because he thought that she was only with him out of family compulsion. Darcy also tells the truth about Johnny: he impregnated Georgie years ago and wanted to marry her in order to get the family inheritance.
Lalita and Darcy are looking for Lakhi and can eventually bring her home. After all misunderstandings have been cleared up, Jaya and Balraj and Lalita and Darcy celebrate a double wedding in India.
