Naveen William Sidney Andrews (born January 17, 1969 in London ) is a British actor . Andrews became known for his roles in The English Patient and the television series Lost .

Personal life

Andrews is of Indian descent and grew up in London. During his school days, he had a relationship with his math teacher, which resulted in his first son. Andrews became addicted to alcohol and heroin in the early 1990s. His film career ended for the time being and he went to the United States for rehabilitation .

Andrews was in a relationship with actress Barbara Hershey until the end of 2009 , and they met while filming Drowning on Dry Land (1999). This relationship had a brief break in 2005. Andrews' second son comes from this time, whom he has with the Czech Elena Eustache , who is now also an actress.

In 2018 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Career

After school, Andrews attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama . This gave him his first role in the 1991 film London Creates All by Hanif Kureishi . He achieved his breakthrough as Kip in The English Patient . From 2004 to 2010 he played the Iraqi Sayid Jarrah in the television series Lost .

This was followed by roles in films such as Planet Terror (2007) and appearances in television series; so he appeared in Sindbad in a recurring supporting role. Andrews has played the supporting role of Jonas Maliki in the Netflix series Sense8 since 2015 .

The mystery series Lost , through which Andrews also became known to a larger audience, shaped the longest part of his career . In an interview, Andrews described the role of the Iraqi Sayid , which he played in it from 2004 to 2010, as that of a person who is used to violence, but still has a romantic streak. In this interview he also described his rather negative impression of the third season of Lost as follows: "[...] Because it really seemed that the story was twisting and that the scriptwriters were forcing exactly that. Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof had each other during the Time spent on the series being canceled. What they achieved is that the series will definitely end after the sixth season, so the quality can only improve. I hope. [...] "
