Small horseshoe
The small horseshoe was a motivation badge of the German Equestrian Association for children and young people up to 16 years in equestrian sport and in vaulting . Attendance of a preparatory course was a prerequisite for participating in the badge test.
With the training and examination regulations of the German Equestrian Association (APO) 2014, the small horseshoe was replaced by the riding badges 8 and 9 and the vaulting badge 9 . These are open to all age groups.
The exam
The badge test consisted of a practical and a theoretical part.
In the theoretical test, the candidate had to prove that he was able to correctly name the most important cleaning and equipment items and knew the basic needs of the horse and the most important principles of horse behavior and handling. Basic knowledge of horse keeping and feeding, animal welfare and accident prevention were also relevant to the examination. In addition, basic knowledge of riding and vaulting was asked.
The practical part of the exam comprised the correct leading and tethering of a horse including passing other horses and safety in the stable lane as well as horse care (cleaning, hoof and tail care) and helping with bridling and saddling or harnessing.
In addition, riders had to do a short departmental task and show that they mastered their horse in all three basic gaits (walk , trot and gallop). Several train figures also had to be ridden forward. In most cases, according to the new order, the three jumps of the big horseshoe were added here.
In the vaulting badge test, the practical part comprised running in time (canter and trot), jumping up (with assistance), four single and one double exercises and jumping in step. In addition, two exercises in gallop were shown.
The next higher badge was the Great Horseshoe .
