Planet Terror (original title Grindhouse: Planet Terror ) is an action and horror film from 2007 by director Robert Rodriguez . It is part of the double feature Grindhouse , whose counterpart is Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof .

action

The go -go dancer Cherry Darling is quitting her previous position in a nightclub and now wants to become a stand-up comedian . On a Texan country road, you encounter military vehicles that are on their way to a nearby military base. There their leader Lt. Muldoon purchased another dose of a dangerous poison gas called DC2 from biochemist Abby. He and his men were poisoned with DC2 in Afghanistan and thus became zombies , only the poison itself acts as an antidote and prevents the destructive side effects. In the course of an argument with Muldoon, Abby releases the gas, which now spreads around the base and turns the residents into zombies.

Meanwhile, Cherry Darling is in "The Bone Shack", the barbecue restaurant operated by JT Hague. There she happens to meet her ex-boyfriend El Wray, whom she had left some time ago and whom she is now asking to bring her back to town. Along the way, they are attacked by zombies who attack Cherry and tear off her right leg before El Wray can shoot them away. El Wray is now driving Cherry to the hospital.

There they meet the psychopathic Dr. William Block and his wife, anesthetist Dakota Block, who is about to carry out her plan today to ditch her husband to run away with her lesbian friend, Tammy. Sheriff Hague soon appears and arrests the mysterious El Wray for possession of weapons. At the police station, Sheriff Hague receives an emergency call from his brother, the steakhouse owner JT, who is being harassed by two zombies. Shortly afterwards, other zombies attack the police station.

After further involvement, the survivors arrive at the military base, where they kill Muldoon and flee the base. The Hague brothers die, and El Wray is also killed. Cherry arrives with the rest of the survivors in Mexico, where they "always have the sea behind them", from where they can start the counter-offensive. Their daughter, who was conceived on one of their last night of love, is also born there.

At the end of the credits you see Dakota Block's little son playing with the animals in his terrarium on the Mexican beach, even though he accidentally shot himself.

DVD release

The film was released on DVD on March 31, 2008 in three different versions. Once in the steelbook version with an FSK-18 approval, but in the cut version, then in an "uncut" version in the same steelbook, which is intended for rental, and then in a limited 2-disc collector's edition . The uncut version was indexed on September 30, 2008 . Indexing was lifted in May 2019.

Trivia

  • In the film there is a reference to Death Proof , the other part of the double feature Grindhouse . A message can be heard on a car radio saying that a certain Jungle Julia has died. Jungle Julia is a character from Death Proof and was killed by stuntman Mike.
  • Even Dr. Dakota Block ( Marley Shelton ) appears in the middle scene in the hospital in Death Proof . She is annoyed with Earl McGraw , who does not take her seriously. It is not said that he is her father, but explains her reaction.
  • In the scene where Dr. Dakota Block ( Marley Shelton ) prepares her syringes, you can see a notepad on which “Kill Bill” can be clearly read, an allusion to the second Grindhouse director Quentin Tarantino and his film double pack Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 .
  • Dr. William Block is infected as part of the zombie attack on the hospital, after which he does not return until the end of the film. Dakota Block meets him waiting in the helicopter at the military base. Outwardly he seems to belong to the willless, mutated zombies, but he talks normally with his wife and seems to be in control of his senses or has (still) the ability to speak. Although he seems more aggressive and psychologically unstable, this is a contradiction to the zombie situation in the film itself and in the genre in general. This is where an infected person is usually deprived of their human abilities (thinking, remembering, speaking, etc.).
  • The short scene after the credits is an excerpt from an alternative version of the film in which Tony Block does not shoot himself. Rodriguez shot this version especially for his son, who plays the role of Tony Block.

More information on individual titles

You Belong to Me - Rose McGowan (2.15min): The song was first released by Pee Wee King , Redd Stewart, and Chilton Price. After that, it was re-recorded 80 times by other artists. In film and television, the song, first published in 1952, was heard in Natural Born Killers in 1994 , in Shrek in 2001 and in Mona Lisa's smile with Julia Roberts in 2003 . The song was sung for the first time by Sue Thompson . The song reached top positions in the charts only twice, sung by Dean Martin (number 12) in August 1952 and previously by Patti Page , which brought it to number four on the Billboard charts.
Too Drunk to Fuck - Nouvelle Vague (2.15min): In the original, Too Drunk to Fuck is the fourth single by the Dead Kennedys . After the band broke up, Jello Biafra was sued by the other former band members , which led to all of the band's licenses being awarded to the Decay label , which is operated by all band members except Biafra. In 2006, the film Grindhouse was granted a license. The piece, which was still released on record at the time, belongs to the hardcore punk genre .

Reviews

"As a homage to the" trash cinema "of the 1970s, a drastic horror film staged that does not break or question the genre, but rather uses its clichés and at best falls out of the frame through the type staff of the" intact "."

“Despite [...] unrestrained oversubscription, Robert Rodriguez serves his audience with a blood-spattered splatter farce, boasting first-class figures, which exudes the spirit of old zombie films every second. "Planet Terror" lacks the reflective level of Tarantino's "Death Proof" when celebrating well-known genre motifs. On the other hand, looking at the brilliant concept film, thanks to the extra-amateurish editing sequences and various artificially inserted signs of wear and tear, you actually have the feeling of sitting in a train station cinema from the 1970s. [...] Conclusion: This sophisticated Trashkino homage is the perfect party film for film freaks with a strong stomach. "
