Patti Page
Patti Page (born November 8, 1927 in Claremore , Oklahoma , † January 1, 2013 in Encinitas , California ; actually Clara Ann Fowler ) was a Grammy- winning American country and pop singer who hit Tennessee in 1951 Waltz had her greatest success. She is considered the most successful singer of the 1950s in the USA with over 100 million records sold.
Beginnings
Ann Fowler came from a large family. She was born in Claremore , Oklahoma (other sources name Muskogee ), grew up in Tulsa and sang in the church choir. She later performed with two sisters under the name Fowler Sisters . In the mid-1940s she worked for the radio station KTUL. When the singer of a Page Milk Company-sponsored radio show called Patti Page left the station, Ann Fowler took over the role and the name she kept from then on. The band leader Jack Rael spotted her on the radio and became her manager. In 1947 she received a record deal from Mercury Records . A year later she appeared with jazz musicians Benny Goodman , Teddy Wilson , Wardell Gray and Stan Hasselgård and had her first top 20 hit with Confess by George David Weiss and Bennie Benjamin . Since they had to pay for the production themselves and could not afford any background singers, several voices she sang were superimposed. Patti Page was the first to introduce overdubbing into pop music.
Career
After further successes, including the number one hit All My Love , she achieved the fourth million-seller in 1950 with Tennessee Waltz . Pee Wee King had recently had a country hit with the song he wrote with Redd Stewart . Patti Page made the crossover into the pop market. Tennessee Waltz stayed at number one for 13 weeks and became one of the biggest hits of the 1950s. In total, more than ten million records of the song were sold.
In the following years she was often represented in the pop charts. With (How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window she was able to place herself again in first place in 1953. Other big hits were Go On with the Wedding (1956), Allegheny Moon (1956), Old Cape Cod (1957), Left Right out of Your Heart (1958), Go On Home (1952) and Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte (1965) ). From 1958 she had her own television show, the Patti Page Show . Occasionally she also appeared as an actress, for example in the 1960 Oscar-winning film Elmer Gantry and two years later in the comedy Sexy! .
From the late 1960s, their placements in the pop charts decreased. She switched to country music , where she could post medium hits for a few years. She had her last chart success in 1981 with No Aces . In 1997, Page gave a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on the occasion of their 50th anniversary in the music business . She was awarded a Grammy for the CD Patti Page Live at Carnegie Hall - the 50th Anniversary Concert .
Patti Page performed publicly with musical performances until 2012. She died on New Year's Day 2013 in Encinitas at the age of 85. The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded posthumously to her. In May 2015, the Patti Page Exhibit opened at the Claremore History Museum (MoH) in her hometown, Oklahoma .
