From Dusk Till Dawn is a film by Robert Rodriguez from the year 1996 . In the first part a gangster film and road movie , in the second part it becomes a vampire horror film and ends as a splatter film with a lot of black humor .

action

Brothers Richard and Seth Gecko are on the run to Mexico , the FBI and the Texan police close on their heels after a prison break and a bank robbery that kills several people, with three women hostage on the run . While Seth has his emotions under control, Richard shows himself to be a choleric, behavioral sex criminal. When they go to a drinks store on the way to buy a street map, Richard unnecessarily murders another Texas ranger , after which both of them also kill the seller. Richard's hand is shot through and two of the hostages escape. The brothers continue on with the third hostage, an elderly bank clerk who is locked in the trunk of the getaway car. On the way they take a room in a motel , and Seth leaves his brother alone with the hostage to explore the way to the border. When he returns, he is horrified to find Richard's hostage abused and brutally murdered.

The clergyman Jacob Fuller, who doubts God after the death of his wife, also stayed at the motel with his daughter Kate and his adopted son Scott. Without further ado, the brothers take the Fullers hostage to get across the border in their motorhome. On the way, Seth makes sure that Richard stays away from the young girl. They manage to cross the border hidden in the mobile home. You go to the Titty Twister , a remote table dance bar with brothel operation to which it has ordered for the next morning, the Mexican underworld boss Carlos. He wants to grant the gecko brothers asylum in El Rey for a share of their prey .

Seth intends to spend the time until Carlos arrives in the dubious bar. At the entrance, the brothers mess with the doorman and beat him up. In the bar, which is well-stocked with truckers and bikers , a number of dancers in tight clothes move lasciviously on tables and galleries to the music of a Mexican band. The group takes over a table and starts drinking. When the main attraction of the establishment, the seductive Santanico Pandemonium, ends an erotic dance, the doorman appears at the table, accompanied by the bartender and the bouncer. Richard is stabbed in the injured hand by the bartender with a knife, whereupon the brothers knock down the attackers with shots and a knife. Richard's blood flowing down caught the attention of Santanico, who suddenly turned into a monster, jumped on the injured man and tore open his neck with her teeth. The downcast trio also rises again - like the dancers and the rest of the staff, they are vampires. They transform themselves, attack those present and organize a slaughter to which almost all guests and Richard fall victim. Seth and the Fullers defend themselves successfully, together with two other guests: Frost, a strong Vietnam veteran, and Sex Machine, a biker and whip artist. They manage to stake the entire horde of vampires or stab them in the heart, whereupon their bodies burn.

After a short respite, however, danger threatens again when Richard and the bitten, dead truckers also turn into vampires - the group prepares them to vampire too. However, Sex Machine is bitten, mutates shortly afterwards and falls on Frost and Jacob Fuller. Frost can throw him outside through a window, but now tons of bats invade, transform into vampires and attack. Frost mutates too. Seth, Kate and Scott can hide in a small storage room. Jacob joins them shortly afterwards.

Jacob knows that he will soon transform from the bite and is returning to his faith. He makes holy water to fight the vampires. In addition, the storage room is full of goods that have been brought in by the vampires from the trucks of their victims over time, from which the survivors make other weapons. Jacob makes the others promise to destroy him as soon as he transforms. Then they return to the bar and attack the vampire horde. When Jacob transforms, Scott kills him, but is previously bitten by him, grabbed by several vampires and then shot by Kate. Back to back, standing in the middle of the bar, there are only Seth and Kate alive and against a majority of vampires in a seemingly hopeless situation. But they receive unexpected help: the rising sun shines through the bullet holes in the walls - the two are protected by a grid of sun rays. Carlos arrives with his men. They shoot the door open, whereupon sunlight hits the bar's disco ball , is scattered across the room, and burns the remaining vampires.

Seth gives Carlos his share, and Kate also receives a large wad of money. She asks if he needs a company, but he refuses and drives away in the car Carlos brought. Kate leaves the place with the motor home.

In the final shot you can see the back of the Titty Twister , where a huge dig was done. The bar is at the top of a pre-Columbian pyramid -shaped temple spilled by sand, and a multitude of wrecks are piled up on the slopes of the pit - the robbed trucks of many murdered truck drivers.

Sequels

No longer under the direction of Robert Rodriguez two were successors turned.

From Dusk Till Dawn 2 - Texas Blood Money is only marginally related to the original plot. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez acted as executive producers.

From Dusk Till Dawn 3 - The Hangman's Daughter is, so to speak, the prehistory of the first part and tells how Santanico Pandemonium rises to become queen of the vampires. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez acted as executive producers, Rodriguez also co-wrote the story.

In addition to the original, there is also the 90-minute documentary Full Tilt Boogie , which documents the making of the first film. In addition to the main film (approx. 104 minutes), the FSK-18-DVD also has a bonus DVD (approx. 180 minutes), which includes this documentation.

In 2006, the low-budget horror comedy Devil's Den was created without the participation of Rodriguez or Tarantino and directed by Jeff Burr , subtitled Killing from Dusk till Dawn by the German distributor , in which a killer takes her victim to a strip club pursued to Mexico. Of course, both are expected there by a horde of vampires and they have to band together to survive.

Since March 11, 2014, the series From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series has been broadcast in the United States on the El Rey Network . In German-speaking countries, Netflix released the first season of the series on September 16, 2014. The leading roles were played by DJ Cotrona , Zane Holtz , Eiza González , Jake Busey , Robert Patrick and Don Johnson .

  • Translated, the title is "From dusk to dawn" and it refers to the opening times of the Titty Twister restaurant .
  • The "penis revolver" carried and exhibited by "Sex Machine" is the same one that  Salma Hayek took out of El Mariachi's suitcase as the first weapon in the film Desperado - which Rodriguez directed, among others .
  • The German rock band Rammstein processed the scene in which Salma Hayek dances with the snake in their music video for the song Engel .

Reviews

"An extremely bloody ghost that is supposed to consolidate the cult status of its makers, but exposes them as cynical craftsmen who sacrifice history for the manifold effects."

“All of this makes the film not only a pleasure, but also one of the best cinematic grotesques. Not only Harvey Keitel, who plays a completely different character than one is used to from him, Tarantino, who plays a psychotic man very reluctantly, and George Clooney can convince in their roles. With Juliette Lewis and Ernest Liu, the roles of Fuller's children have also been cast well. "

- Filmstarts .de

“'Pulp Fiction' maker Tarantino developed the script based on a vampire story by Robert Kurtzman. Director Robert Rodriguez knew how to increase the horror. With bizarre masks and blatant tricks, the scenes in the vampire bar are reminiscent of the hell visions of Hieronymus Bosch . The mix of road movie and hardcore horror quickly developed into a cult. [...] Conclusion: Powerful splatter cult horror. "
