El Rey Network is an English-language, American cable and satellite television broadcaster aimed primarily at Latinos. It is based in Austin, Texas and was launched in 2013 by film director Robert Rodriguez . It is available in Pay TV packages from Bright House Networks , Charter Communications , Comcast , Cox Communications , DirecTV , Dish Network , Sling TV , Suddenlink Communications , Google Fiber, and Time Warner Cable . 40 million households currently have access to the station.
History of origin
There were already plans for the TV station in 2012. Together with John Fogelman (Comcast) and Cristina Patwa (Factory / Made), he began to draw up a business plan. Robert Rodriguez received a promise from Comcast in the spring of 2013 to be able to feed a television station. Robert Rodriguez and his team took inspiration from the Grindhouse and acquired the broadcast rights to TV series and movies that matched the exploitation and sleaze styles of the 1960s and 1970s and served the 1970s pop culture , including classics such as Airwolf , Knight Rider , Miami Vice or Starsky and Hutch . The station targets a Latin American audience and broadcasts an English language entertainment program that includes a mix of music, action, drama, reality shows and cartoons. Rodriguez uses the same strategy that made his films such as From Dusk Till Dawn and the Mariachi trilogy famous.
The launch on December 15, 2013 was only possible thanks to the financial support of Univision . Initially, the station was only available via Time Warner Cable and Comcast, followed by Bright House Network in January 2014 and Cox Communications in February. DirecTV started feeding in via satellite in January 2014. Dish Network was added as a second satellite service in January 2016. In February 2015 Suddenlink Communications also took over the broadcasting of the station.
In-house productions
From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series , a television series based on Rodriguez's feature film, which he made together with Quentin Tarantino in 1996 , was the first in-house production of the station . In May, the television program The Director's Chair with Robert Rodriguez followed , which illuminates various directors, including John Carpenter in the debut episode and later Guillermo del Toro and Quentin Tarantino. The second self-produced television series was Matador by Roberto Orci , but this only ran for one season. July 2014 starts wrestling telecast Lucha Underground in collaboration with the League Wrestling Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA), which brought so far in three seasons.
