Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) is a Mexican wrestling league founded by wrestler Antonio Peña. In allusion to its owner, the league is also often referred to as Promociones Antonio Peña (PAP) .

history

AAA was founded in May 1992 after Antonio Peña withdrew from his role as booker of the dominant EMLL (now CMLL ). Peña took over many of the more talented wrestlers from the EMLL and was able to establish the young promotion very quickly, while at the same time the biggest competitor was decisively weakened. In addition, he hired unknown men such as Rey Mysterio and Psicosis , who turned out to be lucky. Another competing league called UWA was quickly put out of business by the popularity of the AAA, which enabled Peña to sign their top stars Canek , Dos Caras , and the Villanos .

The league's rapid rise ultimately resulted in a collaboration with the then second-largest North American Promotion World Championship Wrestling (WCW). In 1994 it came to the Pay Per View When Worlds Collide , which could be broadcast in the USA with the help of WCW and which confronted many American viewers for the first time with the technically demanding highflying wrestling of the Lucha Libre .

However, only a short time after this milestone, the AAA's decline began. Art Barr , who together with the young Eddie Guerrero formed the most important heel tag team La Pareja del Terror , died in November 1994, whereupon Guerrero and Madonna's Boyfriend (the third member of the dominant Los Gringos Locos stables ) left their doctorates. Stars like El Hijo del Santo and Fuerza Guerrera were dissatisfied and also left because of the weak Mexican economy and the associated weaker payment, but also because of problems with booking . The cooperation with the WCW should ultimately have a disadvantage - the highflying style became so popular in the USA that the WCW signed important AAA wrestlers such as Rey Mysterio, Psicosis, La Parka and Juventud Guerrera . A 1997 cooperation with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) only meant that some Luchadores were allowed to perform at the Royal Rumble , but did not bring the hoped-for increase in popularity.

In contrast to their “wedding” in the mid-1990s, interest in the AAA in the important US market is now rather low. Annual major events such as TripleMania and Guerra de Titanes can still fill large halls in Mexico, but in direct comparison with the CMLL, which draws over 10,000 spectators into the halls every week and was able to sign some stars from the AAA, they fell behind.

The AAA got a new presence in 2004 through a cooperation with TNA Wrestling . For the America's X Cup , five wrestlers (including Juventud Guerrera, Hector Garza and Mr. Águila ) were sent to the USA to represent Mexico , and they were ultimately able to win the four-country tournament with them. At the first World X Cup in the same year, however, they were defeated by Team USA . The collaboration with TNA ended towards the end of the year for reasons not known in detail. Significantly, at the second TNA World X Cup, the Mexican team was formed from wrestlers from competitor CMLL.

After Peña's death from a heart attack in 2006, Dorian Roldan took over the leadership of the league behind the scenes.

In 2008 Konnan returned to the AAA and took on the role of the league's commissioner. Since then, the style of the league has changed a lot and in large parts it has approximated the entertainment character of the WWE.
