The AAA Mega Championship is the highest title in the Mexican Lucha Libre promotion Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide . The title was introduced on December 16, 2007. It is only given to male individual wrestlers of the AAA roster. As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .

history

The title belongs to the Spanish league Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide , its original Spanish name is Mega Campeonato AAA , the most common translation is AAA Mega Championship , but it is sometimes referred to in the international press as the AAA World Heavyweight Championship .

The title was the main prize in a tournament called Torneo Campeón de Campeones (Tournament for the Champion of All Champions) . As with many champion belts, the title was created from a union of titles from several leagues. It replaced the following titles: IWC World Heavyweight Championship , Grand Prix Championship , Wrestling SUPER-X Monster Championship , Mexican National Heavyweight Championship and Universal Wrestling Association World Light Heavyweight Championship .

The champions of the time competed against each other in the tournament, and a number of challengers were also determined. The first champion was El Mesías , who entered the tournament as IWC World Heavyweight Champion and won the final against the reigning UWA World Light Heavyweight Champion Chessman.

Altogether there were nine AAA Mega Championship winners in 16 reigns. After El Mesías as the first champion, Cibernetíco followed. After Konnan took over the league according to the storyline, Cibernetíco quit and the title was declared vacant. Further title holders were subsequently Dr. Wagner Jr. , Electroshock , El Zorro, El Patrón Alberto and Johnny Mundo . El Texano Jr. was the longest reigning champion with 735 days.

In 2011 Jeff Jarrett received the title, which also performed outside of Mexico with it. At TNA he was allowed to wear the title, but SpikeTV forbade mentioning the name, which is why it was referred to in the TNA broadcasts as the "Mexican Heavyweight Championship" and the AAA lettering was covered.

Outside of the AAA, he was first defended in Puerto Rico's World Wrestling League in 2013. In March 2015, Alberto El Patron was allowed to defend him in the television series Lucha Underground , as the AAA and the El Rey Network cooperated.
