The series premiered on October 29, 2014.

background

In January 2014, Mark Burnett of One Three Media announced that he would create a new series together with Robert Rodriguez's television station El Rey Network in collaboration with the Mexican wrestling promotion Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA). The start date was targeted in mid-2014. In July 2014, the show was announced as Lucha: Uprising . August 2014 the show got its final name Lucha Underground , and the first wrestler names were announced: Sexy Star , Fénix , Drago and Pentagón Jr. The recordings for the series took place in front of a live audience in Boyle Heights , Los Angeles , from September 6, 2014 , instead of.

The pilot episode aired on October 29, 2014 on the El Rey Network and has been on Prime- time Wednesdays ever since . The Spanish-language first broadcast took place a few days later, on November 1, 2014, on the Spanish-language television channel UniMás. There the series is broadcast on Saturdays.

Season 2 premiered on January 27, 2016. In spring 2016, a third season was announced.

The German premiere will be from December 10, 2016 on TNT series.

action

The series is held in the typical style of a wrestling show and is about a so-called "Temple", as the arena is called by the wrestlers and officials. The one-hour program consists of wrestling matches that are broadcast in full length and without commercial breaks, interview segments and short storyline films.

The background music for the program comes from various artists from the punk and ska scene in the United States and Mexico. Another specialty are the so-called "Aztec Warfare Matches", which are shown once per season. This is an episode-filling battle royal .

Promoter Dario Cueto (played by actor Luis Fernandez-Gil ) is portrayed as a heel who uses his power and influence to keep the "good guys" down and give the heels an edge. He leads the league with a strict hand and schedules the matches. In the debut episode, Johnny Mundo won the main fight. The first " Lucha Underground Champion " was Prince Puma on January 7th, 2015 as the winner of the first "Aztec Warfare Match". In addition, the “ Lucha Underground Trios Championship ” has existed since April 22, 2015 . The belt is awarded to members of a trio and replaces the usual tag team belt. This could be the first Angélico , Ivelisse and Son of Havoc secure. The first mega-event Ultima Lucha 1 took place in August 2015 . Lucha Underground is also present in Mexican wrestling , for example Johnny Mundo, Angélico, Alberto El Patrón , El Mesías (Mil Muertes), Brian Cage and the official Marty Elias represented the show at the Lucha Libre World Cup 2015, organized by the AAA, a year later Johnny Mundo, Brian Cage and Chavo Guerrero Jr. represented as "Team Lucha Underground".

During the first season, the wrestler Black Lotus tries to kill Cueto. She is supported by the mysterious wrestler El Dragon Azteca. However, the plan fails and Black Lotus kills her mentor. At the end of season one, after the death of El Dragon Azteca, the wrestlers leave the arena and decide to find a new haven. Dario Cueto was surprised by this rebellion and fled with Lotus and his brother Matanza in an SUV.

The second storyline starts after these events. Cueto is missing while Catrina and Mil Muertes are running the temple. Cueto returns as the plot progresses, and it turns out that while he was away he was training his brother Matanza at an underground fight club. He then wins the "Aztec Warfare II" match and becomes the new champion. As a result, Cueto regains control of the Temple.

reception

Although wrestling is not actually a sport, the series was featured on the sports show SportsCenter on ESPN . About Lucha Underground also been identified in various media such as IGN Entertainment , Forbes , and the Rolling Stone reported. She found favor in both the wrestling media and mainstream media. Two matches alone were included in the list of the 10 best wrestling matches of 2015 on the US television website Uproxx.com.
