Constantine is an American television series broadcast by NBC and based on the Hellblazer comics by DC Comics . The series aired from October 24, 2014 to February 13, 2015. Due to poor audience numbers, the station stopped the series after a season of 13 episodes. After that, the character completed guest appearances on Arrow (season 4) and in the Legends of Tomorrow (season 3), where the character of John Constantine is part of the main cast from season 4. In 2015, ProSieben secured the rights for the German-language broadcast, which has not yet taken place.

As an exorcist and master of the dark arts, detective John Constantine has made it his mission to protect the world from the evil forces of the afterlife in order to wash his soul from past sins. In his fight against demons and other occult beings he receives help from his friend Chas, the clairvoyant Zed and the angel Manny. Constantine has to deal with an "emerging darkness" that is about to haunt the whole world.

In a psychiatric hospital in Northern England, exorcist and master of the dark arts John Constantine recovers from a failed demon casting in Newcastle , in which he lost the soul of the girl Astra to the demon Nergal . He had previously summoned this himself to free the possessed Astra from another demon, but then lost control of Nergal. Through a supernatural message, Constantine learns of Liv Aberdine, who is haunted by the demon Furcifer. He visits her and gives her a trailer that shows places of spiritual activity on a magically prepared map. With the knowledge that Furcifer draws his strength from electricity, and with the help of his friend Chas and former partner Ritchie, Constantine succeeds in luring Furcifer into a demon seal with Liv as bait and banishing him back to Hell with a spell . Shortly thereafter, Constantine gets Liv to leave the city by showing her a bloody murder scene of demonic origin. Before she leaves, however, she gives him the map with the marked spots. Then Constantine is confronted by the angel Manny, who warns him of an impending dark and needs his help.

Using his map, Constantine goes to Pennsylvania , where he investigates the unnatural death of a miner. He meets the illustrator Zed Martin, who has seen him in visions and turns out to be a clairvoyant. Constantine discovers that some workers have already died in the mine under the leadership of the unscrupulous mining company. The unusual knocking noises in the caves allow Constantine to infer mountain goblins , ghosts of dead miners, who, however, are usually peaceful and could only be driven to the murders with dark magic. After the boss of the company is killed by a mountain goblin and Constantine then closes the empty mine by blowing it up, he realizes that the wife of the most recently killed miner, an evil gypsy, is behind the murdering goblins and tried to close the mine Effect mine. When Constantine tries to question her, she sends her goblins on his neck, but is then dragged into the abyss by the ghost of her vengeful husband. Afterwards, Constantine realizes that the frivolous use of such dark magic was only possible because of the rising darkness.

After a former music producer named Bernie commits suicide, Constantine and Zed examine the body. With the help of a spell he learns the name of Marcus Mooney, who tells the two of them the legend of Willy Cole, a blues singer from the 1930s, on the following visit: He had sold his soul to the devil, who was just recording a record when Cole demanded and took it into the underworld. The devil's voice was recorded on the record and every listener is driven mad by it. Bernie was supposed to verify the authenticity of the record for Jasmine Fell, who in turn had sold her soul to have her husband cured of cancer. The mastermind behind it is the voodoo priest Papa Midnite, who requested the record from Jasmine in order to become more powerful himself. When he meets Constantine, he ties him up and then lets two henchmen steal the record. Constantine is freed from Zed, but the henchmen are so influenced by the record that they storm a broadcasting station to play it on the radio. Constantine uses his magic to banish the record and the henchmen to hell, while Papa Midnite goes out empty-handed.

Constantine receives a visit from Gary Lester, who was also involved in the Astra incident in Newcastle and has had serious drug problems ever since. He tells Constantine about how he trapped a demon in a vessel, it broke at an airport control and the demon escaped. Constantine discovers that it is a starvation demon that drives people into a feeding frenzy, but fails to tame it. With the help of the visions of Zed and Nommo, a specialist in psychotropic substances , Constantine discovers that the demon is called Mnemoth and was banished into a boy by a Sudanese shaman to fight famine by means of scarification . Lester had met him during a stay in Sudan and freed him from the demon. After Constantine finds Lester with drug dealers, to his surprise, Lester takes him to the theater where Mnemoth is meanwhile. It turns out that Constantine wants to use Lester as a host for the demon. Lester sees this as a chance to make amends for his mistakes and lets Constantine lock the demon inside. Tormented by Mnemoth, Constantine and Manny Lester stand by his soul on the path to the afterlife.

After a woman in New Orleans is stabbed to death by a stranger wearing a face mask and a man, distracted by a hitchhiker, hits a tree and dies, Constantine, Zed and Chas meet the police officer Jim Corrigan at the scene , who witnessed the first murder. With the help of Corrigan, Constantine finds out that the alleged perpetrators have long since died and that these are their ghosts. The woman with the face mask was a model whose mouth was so disfigured by a partner after several missteps with scissors that she took her own life. The hitchhiker was sent away by his grandmother one day and, in turn, died in a car accident. Because of their feelings of guilt, the model and grandmother sought out Papa Midnite, who lets grieving people communicate with their deceased in the underworld for money. With the approaching darkness he had lost control and unknowingly conjured up the dead as ghosts, which has just happened to him with another victim. Knowing that the three guilty people have to suppress their pain, Constantine and Papa Midnite hold a ritual that sends the spirits back to the underworld.

Constantine goes to Birmingham , where the parents of a girl were murdered, but the child was spared. This leads Constantine to conclude that there is a ghost that haunts children and kills their parents. Constantine receives files from an acquaintance of similar murders, which, however, date back decades. A child from back then, Marcello Panneti, is now an adult and is in psychiatry, but shows himself in a catatonic state during Constantine's visit. Meanwhile the ghost has taken possession of another child, which Constantine tracks down thanks to the mystical map. After initial problems to make it clear to the parents that their son is possessed, Constantine is able to convince the mother when the boy begins to behave strangely. His attempt to banish the ghost to the place of the first murder by means of a séance initially fails. When Constantine then wants to perform an exorcism with the consent of the mother, the boy flees and grabs an ax, which Constantine recognizes that it is Panneti's ghost, as his fingers were chopped off as a punishment in childhood. Constantine is able to free the boy by locking the spirit back in Panneti's body.

In Kentucky , Constantine and Zed meet a Christian preacher who survived a deadly snakebite during a ritual and has since been able to heal people. Constantine finds out that the preacher is in possession of an angel feather that belongs to the angel who accompanied his soul after death, while the preacher holds his gift for God's will. Shortly thereafter, Constantine and Zed encounter the female angel Imogen, who is trapped in the earthly world. Manny discovers that the removal of a feather caused Imogen to fall to earth and that he needs it to survive. The miraculously healed eventually turn into barbaric ghouls and hunt down the pen, which is why Constantine and the preacher have to flee. The preacher confesses to a murder, whereby Constantine realizes that he was on the way to hell and Imogen, as a fallen angel, gave him the pen so that he could later manifest himself on earth with the help of it. In the meantime, however, Zed has brought the pen to Imogen, whereupon the evil angel tries to flee in full possession of his powers. Contrary to his rule not to influence the events on earth, Manny stops her by ripping out her heart and thus killing her.

At the request of the nun Anne Marie, a former friend of Constantine and present at the Newcastle incident, Constantine and Chas go to a convent in Mexico City , where the demon goddess Lamashtu kidnaps a newborn baby and killed the mother. When another baby from the same family is kidnapped, Constantine asks her grandmother, who sees this as a sign of the return of “La Brujería”, an extremely diabolical wizarding tribe from Chile that is believed to have been extinguished and that Constantine associates with the onset of darkness. After Constantine lures Lamaschtu with a spell and follows her with Chas and Anne Marie into the sewer system, she explains to them that she is providing “La Brujería” with offspring while they are preparing the union of earth and hell. With the help of Pazuzu's seal Constantine Lamashtu banishes, but while Chas is bringing an infant to safety, Constantine and Anne Marie are stopped by an invunche, an ancient bloodthirsty monster. To save the other newborn and herself, Anne shoots Marie Constantine and leaves him to the Invunche. Meanwhile, in Constantine's house, Zed is kidnapped by intruders who want to bring her to her father.

As a last resort to keep the invunche out, Constantine uses the seal and lets the demon king Pazuzu take possession of him. When Chas brings Constantine to the surface, the demon takes control of him and lets him brutally murder several gang members while on the run, whereupon he ends up in prison. Meanwhile, Zed has freed himself from the violence of her kidnappers and flies to Mexico City on Chas' call. There Chas, Zed and Anne Marie end up in prison and want to perform an exorcism with the help of Constantine's prepared instructions, otherwise his body will be completely absorbed by Pazuzu. In doing so, they are disturbed by Nahash, the personification of the sinful serpent from paradise, who tries to stop Constantine in the name of “La Brujería”, but can be killed by a holy knife. After this failure, they escape from prison via detours and Constantine is brought back to his house, where the magical defense mechanisms are supposed to help drive out the demon. Anne Marie, also experienced in the use of magic, finally manages to free Constantine from the demon despite Pazuzu's resistance.

Flashbacks show how Constantine put a protective spell on Chas two years earlier on an evening in a bar because of his alcohol consumption before he left. This caused Chas to survive a fire that broke out shortly afterwards and to take in the souls of the 47 dead. Since then it has been possible for him to consume a soul with every death and thus to stay alive. At present, Chas' daughter Geraldine, whom he wanted to visit with his wife, with whom he has a bad relationship, is affected by a series of unconsciousness attacks in Brooklyn . Constantine realizes that the souls of the comatose victims have been separated from their bodies by sophisticated black magic. Through a vision of Zed they find the shelter of the magician, who is Felix Faust. This then disregards their agreement to release Geraldine's soul for the extermination of an enemy demon, whereupon Chas wants to save his daughter himself. He ties Faust to himself with a magical object and detonates a hand grenade that kills both of them. Faust's spell is broken and Geraldine regains consciousness while Chas is reunited with his family.

After a student of Ritchie, who is a professor at a university, collapses and dies, Constantine investigates the case and discovers that he was one of four unsuspecting teenagers who tried an ancient Egyptian ritual that briefly transported their consciousness to another world Has. Ritchie connects this with Jacob Shaw, who is said to have once succeeded in using the ritual to create an artificial dimension into which he transferred his consciousness due to an impending murder trial. After two more students die, it turns out that the three victims had been spiritually connected to Shaw's world since the ritual and that Shaw was able to pull them to his side through reflective surfaces, where he killed them. After the last student is dragged into Shaw's dimension in the presence of Constantine and Ritchie, the two follow her with the ritual. In the other world, the three deceased are alive as Shaw can deform the world as he pleases. With his knowledge, however, Ritchie succeeds in seizing control of the world and wiping out Shaw's spirit. The last student can be saved and Constantine and Ritchie return with her.

On Manny's advice, Constantine and Chas and Zed visit a patient who has been hospitalized with black veins, who dies shortly afterwards. Zed has a seizure and is examined, and it turns out that a brain tumor is the trigger for her visions. Constantine uses a spell to temporarily bind Manny into a doctor's body. Together, the two find a brutally murdered hospital employee with a dark heart, which Manny inferreds the black diamond. This is a manifestation of pure black magic by an evil wizard and was once split into several parts by heavenly light, which have spread over the earth. In a clash with the murderer, Constantine cannot see his face, which has been disfigured by the black magic, but with Manny's help he discovers that it is Zed's doctor who ingested part of the diamond as a war medic in Baghdad . A fight ensues in the course of which Constantine frees Manny from his body, whereupon the doctor appears in angelic form in front of the doctor and stops him with the help of divine light. On Manny's advice, Zed does not have the tumor removed and sees this as a price for her gift.
13 - Waiting for the man Feb 13, 2015 - David Boyd Cameron Welsh
Detective Corrigan seeks Constantine's help in the murder of a colleague who is investigating a case of three kidnapped girls. While examining the body, Gary Lester warns Constantine from the underworld of a bounty on him. After the perpetrator turns out to be a Satanist and kidnaps another girl, Constantine manages to find out where the girl was kidnapped by means of a specially created vision. There Constantine is attacked by a voodoo zombie from Papa Midnite who is looking for the bounty, who is shot by Corrigan. When Papa Midnite visits Constantine personally, the latter manages to incapacitate Midnite and hand over to the police. Through a vision from Zed, the trio find the whereabouts of the Satanist who kidnapped the girl and wanted to "marry" the three other, meanwhile dead, girls in the name of the devil. You kill him and free the girl. While Zed and Corrigan get closer in the evening, Manny Constantine confirms that their common fight against evil is successful. Manny then frees Papa Midnite from the violence of the police and reveals himself to him as the mastermind behind “La Brujería”.
