As an eleven-year-old boy, Barry Allen saw his mother Nora being killed by a mysterious, glowing yellow man with lightning powers. Barry's father Henry is arrested for murder and ends up in jail. 14 years later, Barry works on the crime scene investigation for the Central City Police Department , assisting his supervisor, Detective Joe West. His daughter Iris has been friends with Barry for a long time. Eventually, a new one will be built in Central City by Dr. Harrison Wells activated the particle accelerator, which, however, explodes due to a faulty design. The resulting pressure wave of dark matter creates a storm that causes Barry to be struck by lightning in his laboratory and fall into a coma. Nine months later, Barry wakes up in the presence of STAR Labs colleagues Cisco Ramon and Caitlin Snow and Dr. Wells. Barry is now using Cisco radio to help fight crime in Central City and help civilians in distress. Barry notices again and again how he suffers minor dizzy spells. When chairman Simon Stagg gave a speech at Stagg Industries, an organ transplant research company, which was also attended by Barry and Iris, the speech was interrupted by a group of armed, masked men who rob the guests. Barry collapses when trying to chase them. During the subsequent examination, Caitlin finds that Barry is suffering from low blood sugar levels due to the speed his body has to endure , which he has to compensate for with increased calorie intake. Finally, the STAR Labs team finds out that the group of criminals is actually just one person, Danton Black, who is also a meta-being and has the ability to reproduce, i.e. to create clones of himself. Meanwhile, Stagg, witnessing Barry's abilities, reveals to Dr. Wells plans to conduct experiments with Flash, whereupon Wells kills him to save Barry from Stagg's experiments.

After poison gas kills an entire criminal family in a restaurant, Barry investigates the scene and concludes that the gas came from a person who controlled it. While Barry and Joe look for the killer, the STAR Labs team around Dr. Wells to convert the site of the destroyed particle accelerator below their laboratory into a prison for meta-beings in order to be able to examine and undo their capabilities. Caitlin is saddened by this idea, as her fiancé Ronnie Raymond made sure that the particle accelerator explosion did not have any more devastating effects, which he paid with his life. Barry has now found out that the perpetrator is the meta-being Kyle Nimbus, who was executed by poison gas during the explosion, survived it and now has the ability to transform into the same gas. Barry stops a robbery on a diamond transport and is able to identify one of the robbers as Leonard Snart. Felicity Smoak, Barry's former Starling City friend, comes to visit to see her boyfriend again after 9 months. Barry introduces her to his work at STAR Labs, revealing that Felicity knows about Barry's secret identity as Flash. Meanwhile, Snart has managed to steal a cryonic weapon from the STAR Labs that slows Barry's movements and with which he wants to kill him. The weapon was secretly developed by Cisco in case Barry got out of hand. Both Dr. Wells, who cares very much about Barry's safety, and Barry himself are angry with Cisco. With the help of Felicity, they can locate Cisco's weapon, and therefore Snart, in a museum where there is an exhibition about the diamond. After Snart fails at Barry the first time, he manages to get the diamond that night. When Barry appears, he is powerless against Snart's frost weapon and has to admit defeat. However, Cisco and the rest come to his aid and drive Snart to flight. Eventually, Felicity says goodbye to Barry to return to her own team in Starling, realizing why they can't be together. Meanwhile, Snart convinces his former partner Mick of a plan to ensure that Flash disappears from Central City.

There is an explosion in a skyscraper, whereupon the bomb specialist Bette Sans Souci, who works in the military, is suspected because she was spotted at the crime scene. The STAR Labs team finds that Bette is a meta-being who was recovering from shrapnel injury during the particle accelerator accident when the shock wave hit her and the shrapnel spread to her cellular level. Finally, the military, under the command of General Wade Eiling, is taking over the case from the police, which many years ago, along with Dr. Wells made experiments on soldiers to make them stronger. Since he is now after Bette, Barry places her at STAR Labs, where she has to realize to her suffering that her explosive power cannot be reversed. Dr. Wells advises Bette to kill General Eiling, but Barry stops her attempt, causing Eiling to survive Bette's explosion. Iris is visited by Flash who asks her to stop writing about him on her blog as he thinks doing so could put her in danger. Eventually, Barry comes across a man who the police are chasing after he turns his body into steel to knock Barry down before he escapes. At STAR Labs, where Barry is healing broken bones from the fight, they discover that the meta-being is Tony Woodward, a bat that Barry knew from school, which fell into a container of molten scrap when the particle accelerator exploded and then was given the ability to turn his body into steel. Barry is beaten up again when he meets Woodward again. Cisco explains to Barry that he only has a chance against Woodward if he hits him with enough run-up and at exactly the right angle with which he could penetrate his steel skin. Finally, Woodward kidnaps Iris and demands that she write about him instead of Flash on her blog from now on. Barry appears and follows Cisco's instructions, allowing him to take out Woodward with one perfect punch. Woodward is then locked in the Metawesen prison. In Central City, a bank is robbed by the meta being Roy Bivolo , who used his ability to incite people against each other. When Barry tries to capture Bivolo in his hideout, Arrow aka Oliver Queen, Barry's friend from Starling City, appears, but Bivolo escapes. The reason behind Oliver, Felicity and Diggle's appearance is a murder of their own in Starling City, the trail of which led them to Central City. Oliver agrees to help Barry with his case, provided that he practices his approach, which Barry clearly displeases. When Barry tries one more time to grab Bivolo, he manages to look him in the eye and flee. Back at STAR Labs, where Barry appears to have suffered no consequences, Caitlin and Felicity discover that the special eye color Bivolo can take on affects people's emotions, which makes them angry. A man in a yellow suit and with the same skills as Barry breaks into the leading research company Mercury Labs, STAR Labs' former competitor, and fails to steal the " Tachyon Prototype" developed by Mercury . At STAR Labs, Dr. Wells that the burglar wants to use the device as a weapon through the tachyons, particles moving faster than the light. Meanwhile, Caitlin discovers that Ronnie is still alive and looks for him with the help of Cisco. Ronnie, however, calls himself "Firestorm" and doesn't seem to be able to remember them anymore. Eventually the man in the yellow suit appears in front of Barry's laboratory and, after a brief chase, Barry identifies him as his mother's murderer. In a disguised voice, he explains to him that Barry has always been inferior to him, whereupon he knocks Barry down in battle and flees. When Dr. Stein shows up and tells that he sensed Ronnie's danger in the café, the team finds that Ronnie and Stein are still emotionally connected. After a visit to the military, Dr. Wells, Dr. Stun Stein to hand him over to General Eiling. The team then uses Ronnie's intellectual attachment to Dr. Stein to find out his whereabouts. Meanwhile, Eiling tortures him in order to reveal the secret of the transmutative nature of Firestorm. Barry and Ronnie get to the hidden military base and Barry can find Dr. Rescue Stein just in time before Eiling shoots him. When Barry is then incapacitated, Ronnie and Stein are forced to fuse again using the quantum splicer they brought with them to hold back the soldiers. Barry and Firestorm escape and return to STAR Labs, where Ronnie and Stein manage to separate in a controlled manner. The two decide to leave Central City for the time being to get away from the military. Barry decides to find a way to go back in time and save his mother. Finally, Dr. Wells as Reverse Flash General Eiling into the sewers, where he is dragged away by Gorilla Grodd.

The meta-being Mark Mardon, able to control the weather since a plane crash with his brother Clyde a year ago, wants revenge on Clyde's murderer, Detective West, and first kills a coroner in the morgue, where Barry is late and only his body finds. After a first failed attack on Joe, Mardon finally appears in the police station, but when he attacks Joe, the police chief throws himself in the way, is badly hit by Mardon's lightning and falls into a coma. After Barry rushes at Zoom in anger, he is unexpectedly killed by a second Zoom, who describes the first as a time relic, a kind of duplication of himself in time, and flees. After Henry's funeral, Barry is visited again by Zoom and asked to race to see who is the fastest. The team suspects Zoom's intention to use the stolen magnetar from Mercury Labs to generate an impulse strong enough to destroy the multiverse . Since the team, in contrast to Barry, considers a race too dangerous, it locks Barry up and develops the plan to promote Zoom to Earth-2 and then to close the portals forever. In return, Caitlin distracts Zoom with an attempt at advances, while Harry takes him under fire and Cisco creates a portal that Joe Zoom pushes into. However, Joe is sucked through the portal and captured by Zoom on Earth-2, who reveals to him in his hiding place that the man in the mask is the real Jay Garrick of a parallel world. Freed from Wally, Barry can no longer be stopped from the race, which takes place a short time later at the magnetar's location within an accelerator ring. In a race with Zoom, Barry succeeds in creating a time relic that counteracts the impulse with its speed and stops the magnetar from being charged.
