The Power of Love ( OT : Duet ) is the 17th episode of the third season and the 63rd episode of the television series The Flash . It was first broadcast on March 21, 2017 on The CW . Aaron Helbing and Todd wrote the screenplay based on the ideas and designs of Flash - show runner Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, directed by Daniel Dermott Downs.

The episode includes a crossover with the Supergirl series in the form of a musical . Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist met their former Glee colleague Darren Criss , who took on the role of the puller (namely "The Music Meister"). Jesse L. Martin reunited with Jeremy Jordan, with whom he had previously worked in the 2012 musical film Joyful Noise .

The plot begins at the end of the Supergirl episode Lied and Cheated ( OT : Star Crossed , first broadcast on March 20, 2017), in which Kara Danvers / Supergirl is put into a coma by the music master. Mon-El and J'onn J'onzz / Martian Manhunter take them to Earth-1 in hope of help from Team Flash .

action

J'onn J'onzz and Mon-El travel with the comatose Kara from Earth-38 to Earth-1 in the hope that Team Flash can revive her. They warn Barry Allen (Flash) about their escaped prisoner, the music master, who had revealed before his escape that he was after Flash. Meister appears to be inside the STAR Labs, but Barry and Wally West / Kid Flash confront him but are overwhelmed. Meister puts Barry in a comatose state similar to Kara before, both are now together and without their superpowers in a dream world based on their love for the classical musicals. You will meet many familiar faces from the Arrowverse , but each of them has a completely new identity in this world. Kara and Barry find out they work as singers for nightclub owner Cutter Moran. This looks very similar to Malcolm Merlyn (both played by John Barrowman ). Kara sings Moon River at the beginning and is asked by Moran to present something of his own. Together with Barry and the pianist Grady (Winn Schott, played by Jeremy Jordan) they create the song Super Friend .

Before that, however, the music master appears in the dream world and sings Put a Little Love in Your Heart together with the nightclub staff . The staff also includes waiter Pablo (Cisco Ramon, played by Carlos Valdes ). Meister tells Kara and Barry that their only chance to end the coma is to follow the script of the musical and not die in the process. Barry and Kara are kidnapped by the henchmen of the gangsters Digsy Foss ( Detective Joe West , played by Jesse L. Martin ) and his husband ( Martin Stein , played by Victor Garber ) and forced to look for their daughter for them. The daughter is Millie Foss (Iris West, played by Candice Patton ). However, nothing happened to her as expected, instead she ran away (based on West Side Story ) with Tommy Moran (Mon-El, played by Chris Wood ), the son of the enemy cutter Moran. Kara and Barry are able to convince the two of them to face their fathers and realize their own mistakes in their love affairs with Iris and Mon-El. Kara accompanies Tommy to Cutter, Barry accompanies Millie to her fathers. Kara and Barry seemingly put their parents in a mild mood ( More I Cannot Wish You ), but after saying goodbye to their children they prepare for a bloody fight.

In the real world, those left behind become aware that Master is stealing the superpowers of their comatose friends and robbing a bank with them. Cisco, Kid Flash and J'onn (as Martian Manhunter) team up to fight masters. You can actually defeat him and lock him in a cell in the STAR Labs. Barry and Kara are interrupted by gunshots during rehearsals for their play Super Friend , as the gang war between the Morans and the Fosses has started in the back alley of the nightclub. When Barry and Kara intervene and try to end the fight, they are both hit in the crossfire and mortally wounded. Through a hint from the music master, Cisco, Mon-El and Iris discover a way to also get into the dream world. You can save the two dying people and bring them back to the real world. Both relationships get a new perspective, which both Kara and Barry now want to perceive, they confess their love to Mon-El and Iris. Master has escaped from his cell and reveals that his only goal was to save the love of these two couples and now he wants to make his way to other lovers who needed a "lesson". Kara, J'onn and Mon-El return to Earth-38, Barry and Iris move back together. Barry sings Runnin 'Home to You for her and proposes a second time, which she accepts.

background

The idea of a musical episode of The Arrowverse grew as more and more experienced musicians and musical theater actors took on roles in the various series. For example, John Barrowman (breakthrough 1989 with Anything Goes ), Jesse L. Martin (best-known role: Tom Collins in Rent from 1996) and Victor Garber (breakthrough with Godspell 1972) distinguished themselves as successful leading men on international stages such as the West End and Broadway , long before they had a second break on camera. Even Melissa Benoist and guest star Darren Criss began their careers on the musical stage. They all return to the stage regularly. Other actors like Grant Gustin , Chris Wood and Jeremy Jordan have only limited stage experience (Gustin had a supporting role in West Side Story on Broadway 2010-2011), but also have professional musical experience: Gustin played and sang (as did Criss and Benoist ) for several years in the musical series Glee , Wood has a university degree in musical theater and Jordan has been nominated for the most important US music / theater awards Tony ( Best Musical Actor ) and Grammy ( Best Musical Album ) , among others .

As a crossover, the episode brought together characters from different parts of the DC universe . In addition to Grant Gustin and Jesse L. Martin, the Flash cast also included Candice Patton , Danielle Panabaker , Carlos Valdes , Keiynan Lonsdale and Thomas Cavanagh . Melissa Benoist, Jeremy Jordan, David Harewood and Chris Wood joined the Supergirl cast . In addition, with Victor Garber's Dr. Martin Stein and John Barrowman's Malcolm Merlyn two characters from Legends of Tomorrow . Barrowman's Merlyn is also and originally known from Arrow , the mother of the three aforementioned. From the outside, the only guest starring role was Darren Criss , who was confirmed as Music Master in January 2017.

Filming took place between February 1 and 15, 2017, and was directed by Dermott Daniel Downs, who had been associated with the series long before.

The introductory Supergirl episode aired in the US on March 20, 2017, followed by Duet on March 21, 2017, both of which were televised on The CW. At the same time, CTV Two also broadcast the two episodes in Canada . At the beginning of March 2017 an official advertising poster for the episode appeared, Marketing used the term Dynamic Duet , a play on words from the term duet ( Duet is also the original title of the episode) and the phrase dynamic duo (a pair that harmonizes well). In Australia , where The Flash and Supergirl both air on Fox8, the crossover was advertised as a DC Musical Crossover and also aired on two consecutive evenings.

In January 2017, Rachel Bloom announced that she had written a song called Superfriends for the episode to be sung by Gustin and Benoist. As soon as [she] found out about the planned musical crossover, she immediately contacted [CW chairman] Mark Pedowitz, who in turn put [her] in touch with Greg [Berlanti] and Andrew [Kreisberg]. [She] immediately offered them [her] songwriting services. As soon as they had decided on one of the song ideas, she phoned [her] former supervisor ( Robot Chicken ) Tom Root and developed the song 'Superfriends' from the drafts they had collected together. [She is] very excited to be able to contribute to the upward trend of musicals in television and film. Music [could] be one of the most fascinating and efficient narrative forms and means of character development. Also, it was great fun writing a comedic song for two superheroes. ”The song was later renamed Super Friend .

In addition to Bloom, Pasek & Paul ( 2017 Oscar winners for Best Song : City of Stars from the film La La Land ) also contributed to the musical design of the special. For the Flash episode, they wrote the love song Runnin 'Home to You , which is sung by leading actor Gustin ( Barry Allen / Flash ) at the end of the story . Showrunner Kreisberg commented: “Benj and Justin are the best songwriting duo of our time ... to have you on board for our musical episode is beyond our wildest expectations. We hope that all viewers will fall in love with your song as we did with us. "

A soundtrack album titled The Flash - Music from the Special Episode: Duet was released on March 22, 2017 (just hours after the episode first aired) through WaterTower Music. It contains the songs processed in the episode, sung again by the actors.

reception

Jesse Schedeen ( IGN ) described the result as "amazing" ( incredibly ) and gave 9.6 out of 10 stars. He thought the premise was "silly," but was impressed by the preserved and beautifully integrated continuity of the two series. In this context, he particularly emphasized the "immediate construction on the recently emerged romantic entanglements and relationship problems in both Barry and Kara's life". He enjoyed working with Kid Flash, Martian Manhunter and Vibe, and he was “glad the writers didn't even try to spin a romantic subplot with Barry and Kara. As their number Super Friends made clear, they are better suited as friends than lovers. ”Scott Von Doviak ( The AV Club ) gave the episode an A− (German:“ still very good ”/“ 1 - ”/“ one minus ”) “) On the grounds that the chemistry between Gustin and Benoist is extremely good; Gustin's figure was also able to "find his way back to the lovable side of his character". Von Doviak concluded: "Logistically it may be untenable for the two of them to ever become more than 'super-friends', but if the show ever needed the positive energy they exude, it must be now."

Cast and dubbing

In their dream world, Barry and Kara meet a number of doppelgangers of their friends and enemies from the "real" world. A "-" in one of the two column columns indicates that the respective figure only appears in one of the two worlds and has no significant doppelganger in the other world. The dubbing of the episode was done by the dubbing studio of Cinephon Filmproduktions-GmbH in Berlin . Dirk Hartung was responsible for the dialogue book and dialogue direction.
